With technological progression moving very fast, i sometimes feel a disconnection from humanity. For example, i'll be having lunch with a friend and they'll be texting someone on their cell phone. I feel that i want to connect with them but that they cannot give their full attention to a conversation. I am begining to fear that (not all) but a lot of young people are becoming numb to things. I'm always hoping that i'm wrong about it but it seems as though some of the most basic emotions of people are lost. Like on tv seeing someone fall from a building and people are moving on without a care. What has happened to the world? I am very worried.

Hello, fantastic,

It some ways our world and humanity are different but I don't think people are loosing their basic emotions. You'll always hear this "in-good-old-days" tales and but I don't think it's anything more than nostalgia talking in people.

There are all kinds of people are out there, always were...

As for you example with your friend, it's a lack of basic manners -- thumbs down plain rude.

Unfortunately not just the young, I observe it all the time with all generations now. No sense of privacy either, common place here to hear all ages talking on cell phones on a bus about the most private things, oblivious to all around them.

I agree, and I also think it's what the OP was getting at. I've also noticed a great increase of texters in public, at restaurants and even in the theaters. In general, I think most of them (younger kids) have free reigns and very little restrictions with cell/text phones these days. Manners may be decreasing while technology increases. I'd suppose it mainly depends on the parents there.

I have to agree with you on that one. Education is lost when kids have to quit school and bring up their kids! It's really sad and when there's so many youth pregnancies, one wonders how educated youth will be in later decades if there is no real change.

I know exactly what you are saying, but I see it as just toys they are fascinated with, and a bit of addiction, and it gives them opportunity to be involved with the world on different levels, but it doesn't mean that it replaces actual human communication. That is still here.

Yes, a lot depends on how kids are being brought up in a family, but wasn't it always the case? dunno

Toys? It's more like an obsession. Most car accidents these days happen because of text messaging while driving! It's starting to get a little more serious than quick excitement then move on to the next fad sort of thing. I'm proud to announce that i am a young person that doesn't text!
