our friend's wife was angry at my bestfriend for calling her wifey during their chat. my friend felt so upset and she wasnt aware that in england it is derogatory to call someone's wife "wifey" (the couple are british). She apologised deeply and she even mentioned that in google it has no bad meaning.its like when you say hubby. She told them that she isnt british to know that and was very sorry. The wife didnt accept her apologies and said she is angry but will live. I felt that this wife is making a big deal out of it and it pisses me off that some people think that other people should know what is offensive and what is not in their country when to some its nothing. What do you think?

Yes, I totally agree with you Pesh. People should not be so snooty but realize that the world at large has diverse languages and customs.which may at times not be in harmony with theirs'

If the term wifey was not acceptable to her, she should have used the diplomacy that the British are famous for and politely told her opposite number so. And when an apology is tendered sincerely one should display good breeding by accepting it in good grace. Is British diplomacy fading and snootiness taking over??dunno

I think that if they are not on good terms being called wifey can come across as dismissive or q lack of respect. If they call each other cute names all day then it would be fine, but this sounds "new" to her. dunno

The 'ey' part is the offensive part. It's diminutive.

Like, in Spanish, when you want to make something smaller, you change the suffix to 'ito' (For example, Gato, and Gatito - Cat and kitty), it works, essentially, the same in English.

Take names, for example: When you are younger, you are Johnny, or Davey, or Bobby... When you grow older, those names often change to their more 'mature' versions because you are no longer small, or cute. You are now John, or Dave, or Bob, even if they don't call you Johnathan or David.

Considering the status of women 'in a man's world', I wouldn't be surprised to find that women think the term 'Wifey' is offensive. I myself have always thought of it as a pejorative.

Now, is there a double standard with 'Hubby'? Perhaps, but I think when you get down to it, it's the difference in the perception between men and women, and how they (or rather, whether) they assess that as a threat.

I do think it's probably at the very least important to concur that, yes, if there is intercultural communication happening, people certainly do need to understand that not everyone uses the same terminology, and even those who do may have very seriously conflicting meanings behind it.
