This happened recently in Massachusetts. It could have and has happened all across America. Do you think this is a good way to control animal over population, owning large numbers of animals or any of the problems addressed by this story?

It seems to me that it is only a way for a town to make money from it's citizens without offering any service for that money? What do you think?

Mass. Town Puts Limit Of 3 On Owning Cats Without A Special Kennel License

(AP) DUDLEY, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts town has made it illegal to own more than three cats without getting a special license.

Voters at a town meeting in Dudley added language to a town bylaw on Monday night that makes it illegal to own more than three cats without a $50 residential kennel license.

The article was in response to a neighborhood feud over the 15 cats owned by Mary Ellen Richards.

The Telegram & Gazette of Worcester reports that one neighbor claimed the cats have ruined his yard.

Richards has put her home up for sale and says she plans to move to a "more cat-friendly community."

Dudley is about 60 miles southwest of Boston.

I dont own any cats. They just moved in and are living here. All 10 or 15 of them.

How would you feel if your town made you pay for a kennel license for the priviledge of feeding them?

Hi shewolfhug
someone has to take em in and its a shame if a town council can do this..although there has to be some sort of sensible limits sometimes..I once took my cat to be mated and the breeder had 60 odd cats all living in her house...now that was'nt a pleasant place to be!laugh

Hey Solstice wave

Sounds like it wasn't but some can properly care for 50 and some can't but why should a town charge a fee for the right to try?

Sure I would, and then I'd have the SPCA there getting on the town for causing the suffering of the cats.bouquet

The way cats breed, and produce, it looks like Dudley, Mass. has figured out a way to increase their revenues in the taxachusetts way. The lemmings will accept it, and pay their feline dues, or willingly take their pussy cats to the humane society, and pay to have them killed. They're going to pay the fiddler they've allowed to control them one way, or another.

I think they are right if only because the stray pet population is out of control. To say nothing of the feral cats living out there.

That being said I have to ask how well these 10-15 cats were being kept? Was it clean and healthy for them or did the house stink of litterboxes? How much in-breeding was going on within the house if any was?
Basically, was the owner fully responsible for the proper care of them? The neighbor didn't sound too happy about the situation.

Worst case scenario is that it is another regulation in an over-regulated society that unfortunately needs regulations because people just are not responsible most of the time.

The full story is available on the net but a synopsis is the lady was a member of a feral rescue group. All the cats were spayed or neutered and it really wasn't a matter of health or over population. Just an angry neighbor and a town that dealt with it by collecting a license fee.

That's the way I see it. Big brother with his hand in another piece of pie and the people that are trying to help with the problem get zapped with another expense making it difficult for them to help.

Good idea but this town set up a $100 a day fine for non compliance. If they were on your property, even if you didn't feed them, you would be fined. very mad

Sorry but I don't buy that! They can't fine a property owner for feral cats that happen to walk on their property. Feral cats are wild, they belong to nobody.

I'm with you ooby. Talk to the town. I think it is becoming stupid all across America. The over population of pets and the feral population needs to be adressed properly but not by charging license fees to those that are trying to help and fining for non compliance unless that money is going to address the above stated problems. frustrated

These cats in this particular story were rescued feral cats that had been spayed/neutered but if they hang around your yard you would be responsible.

Things are changing Shewolf, and the momentums growing which is going to knock big brother down a peg, or two. The public will shortly regain their ruling power in controlling our for of democracy, along with its laws written of the publics will.
