What kind of solder and soldering iron do you use? What kind of tips? I use my parents old iron, or some cheap irons and whatever soldering tips I can get my hands on. I use canfirlds 60/40 solder, and new lead and zinc every time. i have a rotten time making my solder lay flat and look nice. My flux is 30 years old too. (Hippie era stained glass revival.) THAT might have something to do with it. Anyone else make stained glass? How does your soldering job look? What do you use? I am thinking of getting a fancy new iron and some new flux. What do you do with your stained glass scraps? I have jars of itty bitty shards and tons of plastic shoe boxes full of bigger shards.

Canfield's 60/40 solder. Geez, I wish this would let people edit!!! Arrrrgh! Gets me every time!!! If you want to see my glass, i can tell you where it is posted on the net. it's not up for sale on the net because Ebay drives the price of everything down and Etsy doesn't have any customers and other reasons as well. I mostly give it to relatives on special occasions.

You sound more like an old sailor than a retired policeman. laugh

Use a 1500 watt electric soldering iron or a propane torch with a soldering tip....new clean flux (good fluxing is very important!), and make sure everything is CLEAN before you start soldering.

I've only played with it once, but a friend of mine is an expert with anything to do with glass, including stained glass. If you want, I can ask him for more details.

I'm thinking about getting one with temperature control, and some new flux. No more 30 year old flux that was crap 30 years ago. They say beginners use 60/40 flux. What do non beginners use? I swear I used to get better results 15 years ago when I had less patience and experience soldering. So, I think I just need new equipment. Then, people use those crappy disposable wire brushes to strip the zinc and lead. I'm wondering if I would be better off with cheap drill bits or dreml heads. OR, those brushes come in several kinds of metal. Maybe I'm using a brush using wire that's softer than lead and zinc, but doubt it.

New equipment and materials will make a difference. As for the scraps, have you checked out making concrete and mosaic stepping stones for the yard/garden?

Best advise buy books, go to the library.
I studied under Dan Fenton, He and his lady legends in the world is flat side of glass.

Solder, is an art all in its own, you have to find the way it works for your style, there's a book on working in solder, from flat and smooth to textured look, I know people in this that can't do flat line if they work on 65 degree angle it would still pool for them, but they played with blends and found ones that work for them. all my solder is blends I found work for me for the glass I am doing, what I am making to adding materials to applying other mediums to the solder.
Take time and get to know your glass supplier, they will help you from showing you how to looking at your works and pointing out errors and how to fix them.

Sunshine glass I know up in NY offers plenty of help to the people that buy from them, find your local glass supplier and talk to them, I am sure they offer a good 101 kit and go from there.
If they d/won't find another supplier.

Soldering temp. yes buy the control one, as for shards what type of glass?
if not kiln friendly a lot of jewelery can be made this way, without fusing, epoxy glue and pin backings and lookie cheap fast buttons to necklace beads.
Also, if you still copper wrapping good solder practice here a lot of small one time around things good to do for getting better and if lumpy, hey its a button it works on that.
A lot of people will tell ya they went to lead wrap as it better, truth they suck at copper wrap soldering.

Right now I am making door signs out of my smaller stuff, stuff like arrow pointing to a flower in scrap, kiln glass paint saying no entry without one.

Those and the paw print with a doggie bone sayin bribes takin for entry are hot sellers.

Nothing is scrap, just a medium in a form waiting for you to amagine it to a seller.

I would be interested to see it. I did a night class on it a few years back, only ever made one item so can't advise on anything. My plan was to get into making terrariums but that idea has never got off the ground..... yet !

I use to do stained glass and have added a pic of a mirror I made. This design has a certain church like feel to it. It is based on the "Golden Rectangle" (google it) a shape which is very pleasing to the human brain. It's of copper foil.
I also made a little box which housed a clock I built which had digital number tubes and I even made the printed circuit board for it but my ex wife smashed it by stomping on it when I was at work because she was angry for some reason I can't even remember. It's funny but the reason for her anger has long faded but the image of that smashed clock which I toiled on for a 100 hours remains. It's ironic that she is the one who introduced me to stained glass, but was never able to construct a box complete with a hinged lid.

I would suggest joining a local class.

There you will have the benefit of up to date materials/tools, plus you will meet new people.applause

Pity you don't live closer. I have a soldering iron, and a heap pf lead, from the days I took classes. And so much gorgeous glass, all cut out ready for a fabulous light shade. Won't tell you how long ago that was!roll eyes
