Well, to be precise, it is a "Forensic Assessment Unit"...one of four forensic units where I work...and by far the harriest and most acute...we get untreated violent criminals who have just been arrested for their crimes (usually within a day or two)...and someone wants their mental status assessed to see if they are fit for trial, or criminally responsible for their crimes...lots of fun...I actually love it..but had to take three months of street fighting and defense before I could work there...they're a nasty bunch sometimes..lol!

Nice to see you dragged out this thread though...I missed it!

Sam, I'll bet you guys had a great time with the "sexmnia" assault case, this guy must have been brought to your unit...the Ont. Judge aquitted him and now the Attorney General of Ontario is fit to be tied....they can't figure out how to appeal or make sense of the diagnosis that this man suffers from Sexmnia...he has sex with women when he is asleep and doesn't know it....ummmm, Toronto had a similar one back in the 8o's; guy killed his wife with a skillet but didn't know it as he was asleep...what is it with Ontario....weird.

Seriously though we had a similar case in the States where a guy slept walked and killed his wifes parents. He didnt remeber a thing ,just woke up with a cut hand and blood all over him.He was aquitted so there is a precedent for this.

It has a macrabe sense of humour to it...is it spreading...soon to be a movie "the sleep of murder" or visa versa...and along with "smell-o-rama; Sexomnia ! as a scent or a title, hell either one and the theatres will be packed...ummm could be very in-te-res-ting...:)))

There is a bit of a precedence with this...we had a guy on our unit a few years ago...he went to his wife's parent's house....tried to kill both of them...succeeded with the mother...father was all hacked up for awhile...

Anyhow...this happened in Scarborough, On...and he got off scott free....ain't that a bitch?

I tell ya folks....take it from a gal in the business...if you ever do something that you really shouldn't have (such as attempt to kill your mother in law, spouse, etc)...you must tell the arresting officers that you don't remember a thing...and that you have been very depressed lately...

Works like a charm...it makes me sick...but it does...I see it all too often...frustrating as hell..

Sam I work in the law enforcement field as well. Most of what I do deals with fraud and poorly maintained equipment that is good at stealing your money.

Your right denial, works great. We have to spend huge amounts of time to stop these clowns and more often than not the judge does not understand how the scam works.

It usually ends up in a suspended sentence, meanwhile these guys are making more money than you and I put together, and guess what, all tax free.

I think if I ever did anything like this I would be nailed to the wall and strung up. I don't get it either.

my theory on that pete is when you are a criminal for many years you get good at the dishonesty and have no concience.
Honest people who commit a criminal act get nervous and it eats at our concience so we tell a friend who tells another friend, who in turn tells the cops.

Ya know...the thing that is even crazier is...a LOT of these people blurt right out what they did! YES your honor...I DID smash that guy and his eight year-old daughter in the face with a hammer 45 times.....Is that wrong? I thought the devil had taken over their bodies...and was only trying to protect the public at large!

This is an ACTUAL case (with minor details changed)....and believe you me...this guy is NOT crazy...just very VERY good at saying what he has to say to win that defence....SICKENING I tell you....

While I agree that there are many cases where truly mentally ill individuals do things that they just don't know are wrong (or weren't of the mind at the time to tell)...there are also a LOT of people using this little loophole to their defense! Canadian law states that a mentally ill person cannot be detained in JAIL...they can be held in a minimum to maximum secure unit of a psychiatric facility (like where I work...one step down from a max)....but not in jail....we call those who play the system "malingerers"....and they call our unit "The Hotel"....

Nice, isn't it?
