You are talking about the many dialects of English, of which there are many.

ROFL There is no such language as British, the language is ENGLISH, and its down to regional accent that words are pronounced different, what you are talking about is a Southern, London area accent.
As in what Americans speak is NOT English, it is American, great example the name Craig it is not Creg it is Crayyg, So actor Daniel Craig is not pronounced Daniel Creg nor Creg Fergusson.

We speak proper in the South, but in Heathen country, north of the Watford gap there are tribes with bad English.

The Americans I have met don't pronounce the "T" in often, that was my joke for... Tomycat...
As for the Bulgarian "often", yes, we say the "T" as we pronounce every single letter of the word.
