Although seen more as a fun event rather than a serious outlet for quality songs. This annual event takes place at Stockholm Sweden this year after winning the rights to do so following their victory in 2015 of the contest.
This year there are 42 countries competing with the first of the 2 semi-finals commencing on May 10th to determine who makes up the 26 competing countries in the final on May 14th.
As it stands Russia are the clear cut favourites with betting agencies to take out the event followed by Ukraine and France.
Would like to hear from other interested members of their thoughts and opinions ... and whether there are any "sleepers" to watch out for ?
On a sad note ... Terry Wogan the respected and popular BBC commentator who had hosted the show for many years, passed away earlier this year due to Cancer. Although he gave up commentating on the show a number of years ago due to frustrations with the apparent political and neighbour voting biases. His witty dry humour will always be remembered for giving the show added interest.

allthegoodnamest: Australia
Thanks! .... The song (and singer) are pretty good and Australia is tipped to finish in the top 5 despite not having the visual factor that seems to of become necessary to do well in recent years. Although not sure why Australia qualifies to be in the competition at all considering we're in a separate continent to that of Europe But all the same it's good to be part of the show ... even if it is really only for fun

Nevertheless, the odds of GB winning would differ too much with a non- competing country like AUS.. We never make it past double figures .

galrads: Ukraine in 2016!
The song Wild Dances by Ukraine Rusiana in 2004 justifiably won in 2004.
I'd like to see JAMALA win in 2016 with the song '1944'
I agree with you regarding Ukraine's 2004 entry galrads It was my favourite too and certainly stood out from the rest of the usual stuff ... not to mention Rusiana herself was rather pleasing to the eye
I have only heard the UK song and the Irish song and they're not bad but they've not had much luck in the last 10 years. One of the best of recent years, I think is Norway's Fairytale song, the young guy with the violin, Alex I think his name was. It is a bit of fun even if it's meant to be a song contest and was meant to be for the songwriters.

Yep, combine true talent with all that energy and eye-candy and she had to win. I was in Kiev in May 2005 with a friend. As we later traveled farther East, I found it interesting to hear her explain human anatomy to me in Russian.

Hasn't been quite as fun since Terry Wogan gave up the hosting is it ? ... and sadly there'll be no return now either
When it comes to the UK entrants and that of a few other nations, the fact that their songs are performed live only the once compared to twice from the rest of the competing nations puts them at a distinct disadvantage i believe. Having said that, UK's songs have been pretty weak and disappointing in recent years. Maybe a good shake up is needed as to how their entries are chosen/voted is called for
Very sad to hear of Terry Wogan's passing after being a part of Eurovision for so_ many years. He was truly a national treasure. I miss Max Bygraves too.

Hi chemistrymajor
Yep!, Max Bygraves passed away in 2012 aged 89 here in Queensland Australia after developing Alzheimer's disease... another British national treasure and a sad way to end life following a long and lustrous career
Obviously the voting is pretty well rigged- so many countries have to vote for Russia or they'll turn off the gas. But yeah, we are doing alright so far.

The Irish song is terrible and will come Where it deserves, last and the singer And his corrupt politician father in Law will be crying into their pints of bass
