Brexit brings call for change: has UK ignited battle for new EU?

Germany is pushing to lead talks, but efforts to reshape bloc complicated further by upcoming elections across EU

The German government has been canvassing support for a senior political leader to gather views in European capitals on a new future for the continent in the wake of the Brexit vote, with the aim of completing the task before the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome next March.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said the European Union has "no need to be particularly nasty in any way" in the negotiations with Britain about its exit from the bloc.

She insisted that deterring other countries from leaving the EU should not be a priority in the talks.
And she added she was not in favour of pushing for a speedy withdrawal.
Britain narrowly voted to end its membership in a historic referendum last Thursday.

Mrs Merkel was speaking after several EU foreign ministers - including Germany's - had urged Britain to quickly implement its exit.
"It shouldn't take forever, that's right, but I would not fight for a short timeframe," she said.

She added that she was seeking an "objective, good" climate in the talks with Britain, which "must be conducted properly".

Len05: who knows any consequences?, funny or serious

I heard the overseas soccer-players in premier league will have a more complicated tax code.
And i think Wales, England en Northern Ireland can stay in the EK for now.

A wall between northern Ireland and Ireland. or a fusion?
Exit Scotland?

it's not only because of brexit.

the presidential election is fast approaching and both candidates CLAIM their going after wall street and specifically banks.

this is causing uncertainty in the market and your stock is just "re calibrating" to this news.

Obama backtracks on trade warning after Brexit vote

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is backtracking on his warning that Britain would go to the “back of the queue” for a U.S. trade deal, as he tries to contain the fallout of the U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union.

The shift in tone illustrates how Britain’s vote has abruptly scrambled Obama’s reality. Where the president had tried to encourage the U.K. not to rashly abandon the European bloc, he now must reassure Britain that its decision to do so won’t mean its demise. His priority of locking in trade deals before leaving office now becomes a distant second, behind the more urgent task of restoring confidence in the financial markets and in Europe’s future.

purr4mance: the main reason for brexit is islamophobia.

There is a genuine concern from the British population to fear terrorism (especially when Uk has been involved in the wars in the Me )and in that, it is understandable their decision for Brexit.

However, people fail to see and understand the purpose and causes of the wars (that benefit a few, the elites) and the consequences (the price that has to be paid for the rest)because of their gov foreign policies. Some choose to ignore it.

Minus 10 %? that is a lot in such a short time and I would think (without being an expert) it would be the other way.

the referendum barely past and from what i understand if the people who sat home in apathy, and for the ones who would like a do over because they were lied to to begin with, there would be no brexit. to fear terrorism plays right into the terrorists hands. i think all of us can show concern, but for them to try and run from a problem because their islamophobic isn't the answer. they sat around for years and allowed the muslims to take over their communtities, according to them, now their standing up and saying it's because of terrorism that their leaving the eu? the large majority of muslims are peaceful. for the ones who voted leave, they would be further ahead if they dealt with their islamophobia first.

are you talking about the war profiteers, the ones who help create the problem then sit back and collect the profit from all the sales that go into the making of blood money?

The New European: Archant launches national 'pop-up' newspaper for anti-Brexit readers.

A new national newspaper is being launched in the UK to give anti-Brexit readers “a voice” following the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

Aragorn11: Hi Felixis

From what I have read UK sends approx 6.5 billion per year to EU.
It is estimated that being part of the EU common market, that this figure easily comes back into their economy.

No doubt the UK will survive, financially, they are too big a player and a market not to.

That is my thinking also is that they can afford to leave or stay as they see fit.

I think they would stay though if they really felt they were gaining as much as they are giving to the EU. My impression (as I am not English) is that the open borders policy has many Brits feeling that unemployed from other nations are taking advantage of their generous social welfare, and are not deserving.

So why the choice to exit EU and just not crack down on non citizens receiving social welfare. If the EU prevents that, I would exit too if the country cannot control it's own borders? That's a bad deal.

laugh The truth of the matter is no one knows what the outcome will be.
The top brains disagree, top business people, world leaders ect.
If the UK do actually go ahead with it, then they will find out.
What is needed, whether it succeeds of fails is a good captain at the helm. I personally do not see any contenders confused

There was a poll in one of the papers in Britain the other day in relation to immigration/emigration.
A vast majority voted in favour of British citizens being allowed to work and travel within EU and a vast majority of the same people voted in favour of not allowing Europeans to do the same laugh
Am not sure they get it.

Their economy will survive of that there is no doubt but I don't think they will be better off financially outside of the EU.

It may mean the break up of the UK though with N Ireland and Scotland voting to remain in Europe. As an Irish person I am particularily dismayed at the situation in N Ireland. The peace process is underpinned by European Law and no foresight or regard or plan was given to this as its still a precarious peace.

Given the climb down of the Leave campaign in their assertions before the election, I think if a 2nd referendum was held tomorrow Remain would win the day.

Perhaps the English feel it is OK for them to travel within Europe because they are not thieving off anyone else's social welfaredunno

There is aome discernment needed I think, to recognize that the Brits will need their passports too, if they require that of others.

Nonetheless, I tend to agree with the exit because I am not convinced that staying is in their best financial or cultural interests, mainly due to the open borders problems and loss of self determination.

IDK if the Scots or Irish have really had to deal with the same issues at the channel gate and such.

I think if the UK really felt that they were getting their 6.5 mil back and then some, they would stay. And the 6.5 mil, does that include the cost of social welfare to non-citizens? Just the savings in dues and social welfare alone....

Do you really think that Britain exiting the EU means they will abandon agreements with the Irish? I can see how that would concern you, but time will tell. The EU is an experiment. Perhaps the EU just needs tweaking to keep Britain or get her back.....eventuallydunno

Perhaps, but it does work both ways.
There is an estimated 395,000 ppl from the UK in Ireland and over half of them are claiming social welfare.

The EU definitely needs tweeking and more autonomy is needed for member states imo. Their treatment of Greece was despicable imo. Hopefully the Brexit vote will help, and bureaucrats and number crunchers will actually realise its peoples lives they are playing with and not kow tow to Bankers as has happened with Austerity.

As a market it is fine though and Britain's Gov will want to be a part of that, all the party leaders and leading canditates for Tory rule have stated this.
At what price though.

Its hard to predict what actually will happen.

For a start the British people always needed their passports even before Brexit, there were still border controls within European Union.

The decision to leave the Union was taken by a majority vote, and all the party party contenders and the British Establishment. have said it is irreversible.

This is accepted by the rest of Europe, so it is not if we leave but when.
