I date in RL, if I would have met someone for a date and wouldn't be interested, I would talk to him, and most definitely if we would have seen each other a couple of times.
On here - if someone stopped emailing me, I simply would know he is chatting to someone he is more interested in. If I wasn't interested, I'd rather just stop communication - in the unlikely case he would get back, I'd just tell him I'm not interested in anything with him.

There's definitely a cooling-down period where you hope the person you're currently with isn't too autistic or blinded by love to miss the unspoken obvious.
Normally if the relationship meant anything then sooner or later you owe the person some kind of explanation following on from a period of ghosting. Ghosting at least takes the surprise out of being dumped even to those without the balls or skills to face reality sooner.
