UPDATE: THE strength of an earthquake that struck the Solomon Islands on Sunday has been upgraded to 8.4.
Heavy damage to buildings and infrastructure is likely in an earthquake of that strength.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a warning that hazardous tsunami waves were possible in the next three hours along the coastlines of both the Solomon Islands and nearby countries.
This included Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Pohnpei and Kosrae.
