So how do you do it othewise?

I know it's holding me back. I'm an EXTREMELY slow reader.

But I can't seem to get past it.

I wonder if I can still learn how to read without pronouncing the words. Or am I too old now?

You know, the old dog, new tricks thing. dunno

I've always read like this. I can't imagine not pronouncing the words in my mind as I read.

I might add that I read highly technical books.

I mean even with pronouncing the words I sometimes need to read things more than once to really grasp the concepts.

I’m not talking about reading Harlequin romance novels where it won’t matter if you miss half the details.

Well
I used to read really really slow
I was reading just like you say
Pronouncing every word as if I were reading it out loud
To get over this
I took a sheet of (thick paper) and cut out a hole the sam size as the words are tall in the book
If you read through the little window that you have created in the sheet of paper in time it will go away
However this doesn't work for everyone
It seemed to help me out a lot though

The only problem is , is that your absorbtion rate is going to go down a little bit until you get used to reading in this manner and it could take a few weeks or more to get the hang of it

I can read both ways, but I find if I take the time to pronounce the words then I am more likely to retain the information.
Sure you can still learn to read faster, there is actually this computer program I saw on tv that helps you read faster, it did an example on the screen and its pretty cool, you should look for it. I wish I remembered what it was called...

Well, I think this is true for me too. I can read unimportant stuff pretty quick. I think I just skim over it grasping the major points.

But with highly technical stuff skimming doesn’t seem to work very well. Little word like ‘and’ and ‘or’ can make all the differnce in the world for the overall meaning of a sentence.

I’m not sure if there’s really a way to speed up reading highly technical information without loss of comprehension in the details.

Traditionally, teaching involved first learning the alphabet, then phonetics and finally reading, so most of us quite naturally tend to mentally pronounce when reading.

I teach English and I do this too, but I've had to train myself to skim read, which is what students of English have to learn to do as well as comprehensive reading.

Many CS posts and threads however require mental pronunciation in order to understand them!
