I hate significant other, and ditto to what Kat said about old lady, old man. Ladyfriend is good for you men to use, I like that, but gentleman friend is just too long. Dave, "main squeeze" was outdated in the 70's. "Special friend" sounds like the short bus.
I have a friend from MN who used companion, I always thought that sounded like someone who sits with the elderly.
I guess Bajan and Butterfly are right, there's really no need to define the relationship, it is pretty obvious. Thanks for all your input, it was good for a laugh!
