Song: Nobody Gets Off In This Town

Nobody gets off in this town
Trains don't even slow down

My high-school sweetheart is married and gone
They met on a bus to San Antone

The greyhound stops and somebody gets on
But nobody gets off in this town

Nobody gets off in this town
Old folks 'round here wear a frown

Now let me see if I can set the scene
It's a one dog town and he's old and mean

There's one stop light but it's always green
Nobody gets off in this town

Nobody gets off in this town
The high school colors are brown
They can't drag main because it kicks up dust

The cars and their dreams are starting to rust
The high school dances are always a bust
Nobody gets off in this town

Nobody gets off in this town
They ought to just tear it down

In the winter you freeze, and in the summer you fry

Utility bill's the only thing that gets high
I'd go for a drink But this county is dry

Nobody gets off
Nobody gets off

Nobody gets off in this
Swear old merry go round
No nobody gets off in this town
Maybe, but what about the song: The Chatanooga Choo Choo? rolling on the floor laughing dancing

Akron, the Rubber City, used to be a very vibrant town with a lot of good paying jobs with companies like Firestone and Goodyear.

Now it's like a lot of ex-industrial cities. Underemployment (working for significantly less than you're worth) is very high since most of the new jobs fall into the minimum wage category. The local polititcians are making a big deal about how a national sports equipment chain store will be opening here eventually and will create a lot of jobs. Yeah... clerks and stockboys and other high paying jobs such as these.

There used to be basically two kinds of jobs for adults: White collar and blue collar. What I'm seeing these days is a growing third category I call "paper hat."

The town I live in is refered to as middle America because its centered almost in the middle of the U.S. Salina is a town which is famous for cows, corn fields and college kids and not much else. The place is bordered by corn fields as far as the eye can see.Crime is low and people are really friendly.Last time I checked there were three bars or so and one strip joint none of which are really super busy.Sunday morning is my favorite time because there are tumbleweeds blowing in the streets so to speak because the streets are deserted.Kind of busy in the day but really dead at nite.I bet if ya look up Sallina Kansas in the dictionary it would read low, slow and boring but I like it that way.Not much industry here.Excide, phillips electonics and rayathon aircraft.I work Moving and Storage.Move mostly seniors and such in from the surrounding farms. There used to be an air base here but it has long since closed.I live in what used to be the officers housing on Schilling Air base. And yes we do have a wal mart but then who doesnt.Right across form the wal mart is a pumpkin farm and every year this time the old boy is ready to harvest and sell to the halloween crowd.Nearby we have Manhatten(The little Apple) which is a neat little town. All in all I must give this tiny place a thumbs up.Of course being born and raised in south Texas cow country it would only be natural for me to find a place like this. How do you rate your town.
Being more or less intimately familiar with Salina, I can certainly tell that you haven't lived there all that long. And it's not quite the tiny, hayseed Kansas cowtown that you make it out to be. For one thing, right across from the Wal-mart is a Days Inn to the south, a Sam's Club to the east, I-135 to the west and businesses to the north. And the open field behind the Kwik-Shop has been planted to wheat for the past 4 years with nary a pumpkin in sight. Now that you mention it, there is considerably more wheat around Salina than corn.

There are also more than 3 bars in Salina, but you're right about one thing: None of them are really worth going to. Also, where I come from (West-Central, then later North-West Kansas) Salina is considered to be quite the metropolis. And for industry, you left out PKM, Salina Steel and Tonie's Pizza, as well as a few others.

Still, it was good to see something posted by someone from "back home." I love East Tennessee, but sometimes I kinda' get to missin' my good ol' Kansas highplains!

thumbs up

My town 0 walmart. 1 cop shop, Al, is the chief of police. No jail, gotta haul the bad ones 20 miles to Barron. 1 fire department. Recently, they just built a bowling alley and we now have a dollar store! When I walk the dogs around down town it takes 15 minutes. Deer graze outside my apartment building.
Lived here for a year and it is the closest thing to the country, I can afford.

This use to be a nice small town, where everyone knew everyone. Now it is a bustling tourist area. If ya like to shop, come here, we are tax free and more shops than one can believe! Is never quiet anymore, something always going on! In winter it is skiing. In summer it is camping and shopping and the surrounding mountains. In the fall it is Foliage! We have it all here!

I live in a town that got 2 blinking stop lights last year, and most of us don't like them. No Main Street, post office, street lights or police department. 2 corner general stores that both close by 8 pm. 4 firestations located on each side of town, still maned by volunteers. Darn good rescue team also. Too many new house going up with city folks trying to change the rural landscape. Neighbors still help each other, and know if one of us is missing for more than a day. Nearest small city is 15 miles north or south. Life is good, peaceful and quiet. I can sit on my backsteps and marvel at the stars in peace and safety. I have been home from work for over an hour and not one car has gone by. Some people have to go on vacation to find this kind of solitude, I have it every day.

Well, I live in Brooklyn, New York and just like any other city in NYC there are tons of things to do, places to go, cabs to hail, and places to eat/buy food all day/night.

Of course we have our 24/7 bus and train systems. That recently flooded and actually stopped working during August when they had a flood. The city was shut down! That was a first!

Brooklyn is the home of the West Indian Day Parade. They have it annually on Eastern Parkway. We have several sites for entertainment: i.e. botanical gardens, museums, malls.

Not to mention Brooklyn is very multi-cultural. You can find all types of food that will satisfy any appetite.

And soon to be the home of the Nets. Well, at least that is what I read.

Brooklyn! cheering

I live in the heart of Nevada, A Mining town of about 20,000 people, most of them male.
The male to female ratio here is nearly 3 to 1 , very slim pickings.
This town has 4 Whore houses just off Silver Street and fifth.
Elko is considered a hunting and fishing mecca around the world.
We have Large Elk Herds, Mule deer that rival the size of the Elk.
Massive Mountain Lion.
Bob Cat so abundant they get hit all the time on the freeways here .

The town is so small everyone pretty much knows everyone elses business.
The Ruby Mountains are breathtaking, and the Nevada sunsets and sun rises rival those anywhere else in the country.
If you are a woman looking to relocate, Elko is for you , If your a Man, you should seek solis elsewhere unless you want to work in one of the many gold mines which are abundant here.

Very peaceful but boring, that about sums it up
