Well, after more than two weeks of jumping through hoops, I finally got a call from the company I wanted to go to work for, offering me the job! Then the recruiter was telling me about everything I needed to bring for orientation: Long sleeve shirt, non-skid footwear, birth certificate, social security card, CDL, logbook, etc... Standard fare. Then she started telling me what NOT to bring: No pets, no alcohol, no drugs, no ponytail...

"WHAT?!!! NO PONYTAIL?!! Uh, Ma'am, I have kinda' long hair and routinely wear it in a ponytail." Long pause...

"How long IS your hair?"

"Ummm... Almost to the middle of my back."

"Can you hold on and let me check something, sir?"

"Yes Ma'am." Another long pause...

"Sir, are you still there?"

"Yes Ma'am, I'm here."

"Sir I'm sorry but your hair can be no longer than collar length. Is that going to pose a problem?"

"Uh, yes Ma'am, I'm afraid it might."

"I'd really like for you to come to work for us."

"Yes Ma'am. And I'd really like to come to work for you... But I really don't want to cut my hair."

"It'll grow back."

"Yes Ma'am. Tell you what - Let me talk things over with my wife and I'll get back to you."

"Ok sir."

So now I've lost two weeks in my job search because somehow I never dreamed that my "ideal company" would have a policy against long hair.

Damn! I was really close! frustrated

Am I the only one having these lyrics stuck in my head now? laugh

And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!"
Whoa-oh-oh

No Ma'am. Up 'til now, everything has been done over the phone or via e-mail as the company is located in another state. (It's pretty much standard operating procedure for the transportation industry.) It's just that the company dress code - which also seems to include length of hair - wasn't mentioned until today.

Yeah, I was told that it was because of some of the companies they haul for, so I guess that they could consider it a safety issue. But I've had long hair for the past million miles or so and never had to do more than keep it braided or in a ponytail.

See, that's the thing: When all my contemporaries had long hair, I pretty much kept mine military short. It was later, after I got to doing the mountain man thing and spending my spare time as a living historian that I decided to grow my hair out. (Didn't see very many mountain men with "high and tight" haircuts.) And now it's become almost as much a part of my identity as my buck skin britches, camp fire poetry and habitual good manners.

Just wish I'd have known a couple of weeks ago... frustrated

Write them a nice letter, maybe they will reconsider. It is worth a shot.
