No Ma'am. Up 'til now, everything has been done over the phone or via e-mail as the company is located in another state. (It's pretty much standard operating procedure for the transportation industry.) It's just that the company dress code - which also seems to include length of hair - wasn't mentioned until today.
Could you not keep your ponytail up under your hat? Perhaps they would accept a compromise?

If not, they appear to have had ample opportunity to let you know that was part of the criteria and yet they didn't..... I would say they have misled you? Surely you would have some recourse?
dunno

cheers

Write them a nice letter, maybe they will reconsider. It is worth a shot.
Nice thought, but it wouldn't be fair to other drivers:

If they bend the rules for me then they'd have to do it for everyone. Also, I think part of it might be that they don't want truckdrivers who look like... Uh... Truck drivers. And honestly, I can see their point. I just wish I'd known before I wasted more than two weeks in pursuing a dead end. Oh well, live and learn I guess!thumbs up

But I understand. It's part of who you are as a person. I work in a professional environment - but I ride to work 3-4 times a week, which means jeans, not khakis. Good thing I've been here over 22 years

Companies/organizations have reasons for what they do, even though I don't agree w/a lot of it.

We can't have tatoos visible ....

Unfortunately, I think the only recourse I have is to go to work for someone else and do my best to be the best. Actually, that's why I wanted to go to work for them; Because they have the reputation of being the best flatbed company in the country. And I have the credentials that prove that I'm pretty darn good too - I'm just not good enough for them to circumvent company policy. sigh laugh

sorry to hear that... it sucks! if this company is publicly owned, wouldnt that be considered descrimination?
i lost a job consideration to a company last year because i smoke? i drove 45 minutes just to fill out the application after their HR guy told me in email to come down. since this "non smoking" company thing is fairly new in the US... you would have thought he might of said, "oh, do you smoke?"
they even do a drug test for nicotine. i told the guy if i quit smoking by way of a nicotine aid... would it matter? he said if i tested for nicotine in any form i would not be considered. the sad part was... when i got in my truck to leave, i saw an employee who was behind a desk in the office come out and light one up. sad, huh? i guess "equal employment opportunity" is in the eye of the beholder?

something better will come along for ya, and you will be better off... good luck!

Discrimination would have to fall under one of the Fed regs; race, gender, etc

I am really sorry to hear that, although I still believe you have been misled. If its corporate policy that should be made crystal clear from the outset.

I have talked to many people in the US and it seems that your employment laws are not as "employee friendly" let's say as here in the UK. We, in comparison, have very good protection for employees and even potential employees.... a potential employer here doing that could possibly be in serious trouble! I guess we can't complain, eh?

Working for a company with that reputation would, of course, be good to have on your resume but if you really feel you can't compromise.....

Having said that, maybe its an omen..... its not meant to be because there is something better waiting for you?

cheers

Yep. That's kinda' the way I figured it. (I'm trying to take some consolation in the fact that my better half has had serious misgivings about this company because all the hoops I've had to jump through to get this far.)

That’s almost like saying I don’t get the job because I’m bald. Oh, and when the sunlight reflects from my baldhead it can blur a co-worker’s vision and cause an accident.

Just curious, what company are we talking about?

Anyway, there is such a shortage of CDL drivers I would think you could get a job with any one you chose and they wouldn't care about your hair. What about some of the blimps I've seen at truck stops? Is there a reg about that?

Well, after more than two weeks of jumping through hoops, I finally got a call from the company I wanted to go to work for, offering me the job! Then the recruiter was telling me about everything I needed to bring for orientation: Long sleeve shirt, non-skid footwear, birth certificate, social security card, CDL, logbook, etc... Standard fare. Then she started telling me what NOT to bring: No pets, no alcohol, no drugs, no ponytail...

"WHAT?!!! NO PONYTAIL?!! Uh, Ma'am, I have kinda' long hair and routinely wear it in a ponytail." Long pause...

"How long IS your hair?"

"Ummm... Almost to the middle of my back."

"Can you hold on and let me check something, sir?"

"Yes Ma'am." Another long pause...

"Sir, are you still there?"

"Yes Ma'am, I'm here."

"Sir I'm sorry but your hair can be no longer than collar length. Is that going to pose a problem?"

"Uh, yes Ma'am, I'm afraid it might."

"I'd really like for you to come to work for us."

"Yes Ma'am. And I'd really like to come to work for you... But I really don't want to cut my hair."

"It'll grow back."

"Yes Ma'am. Tell you what - Let me talk things over with my wife and I'll get back to you."

"Ok sir."

So now I've lost two weeks in my job search because somehow I never dreamed that my "ideal company" would have a policy against long hair.

Damn! I was really close!
And a shame it really is.

And no disrespect to any who for whatever reason there fore one has long hair due to there religious background.........BUT it often has made me wonder how the laws and or rules are changed for some, but not for others.

Never would we be able to enter another country and have them adapt to what laws and or religious background we came from.

Sorry about your luck and better luck next time.........:)

The company is Maverick. They have a reputation for being the best and I have a reputation for being among the best. (More than 2million miles and just 1 minor accident.) Just thought it was time for the two of us to get together... Don't look like it's gonna' happen though. Like I said, I guess I'll just have to be among the best for someone else. thumbs up

What an annoying situation, such a waste of time that could have been spent writing!

In my experience incidents like these happen for my protection, and I wouldn't have been happy in the job anyway.
