Well, after more than two weeks of jumping through hoops, I finally got a call from the company I wanted to go to work for, offering me the job! Then the recruiter was telling me about everything I needed to bring for orientation: Long sleeve shirt, non-skid footwear, birth certificate, social security card, CDL, logbook, etc... Standard fare. Then she started telling me what NOT to bring: No pets, no alcohol, no drugs, no ponytail...

"WHAT?!!! NO PONYTAIL?!! Uh, Ma'am, I have kinda' long hair and routinely wear it in a ponytail." Long pause...

"How long IS your hair?"

"Ummm... Almost to the middle of my back."

"Can you hold on and let me check something, sir?"

"Yes Ma'am." Another long pause...

"Sir, are you still there?"

"Yes Ma'am, I'm here."

"Sir I'm sorry but your hair can be no longer than collar length. Is that going to pose a problem?"

"Uh, yes Ma'am, I'm afraid it might."

"I'd really like for you to come to work for us."

"Yes Ma'am. And I'd really like to come to work for you... But I really don't want to cut my hair."

"It'll grow back."

"Yes Ma'am. Tell you what - Let me talk things over with my wife and I'll get back to you."

"Ok sir."

So now I've lost two weeks in my job search because somehow I never dreamed that my "ideal company" would have a policy against long hair.

Damn! I was really close! frustrated

Truckers here can have long hair, it is just some companies that don't allow it for safety reasons. I think it is wrong unless your working around a lot of moving parts.

Have you paid a close attention to this part of her speech?

All they wanted: to hire you with a short hair .... you missed a chance to have a job you like.

Yes I stopped smoking pot while on a job search and I probably would cut my hair if I really needed the job.

Sometimes you have to submit to get what you need (not just want)
