Thanks, everyone, for your comments and support. I was supposed to phone the recruiter yesterday with a definite answer, but spent the majority of the day under the house, soaking wet, trying to cure some plumbing problems instead. (Although I did take a brief break to call another company and have them fax me an application.)

I guess it's true that things happen for a reason and today I am tired and sore from crawling around under the house and have yet another (hopefully minor) plumbing problem to fix. At any rate, I'm certainly not in any shape to endure the 450 mile bus ride that would have been required had my long hair not disqualified me from the job.

After I fix the plumbing I will fill out the application for Sun Belt and fax it back to them and hope for the best. (Then I'm going to take a nice loooong hot shower and nurse my aches and pains and be grateful that it happened now instead of when the temperature was in the teens!)

thumbs up

After spending so much time in the Army being told I can't have a beard, after discharge, I vowed never to have an unshaven face again.

Also wasn't permitted to have facial hair in Bible collegefrustrated So when that was done, I kept a closely cropped beard(see photo).

But a time came when it was either take a particular job, or not pay rent and buy food. My wife had never worked a day in her life, so in order to take this position, I had to shave. I didn't like it, but I had to do what I had to do!!

Stick to your guns, but when push comes to shove......crow tastes better than stale breadwink

Well, after more than two weeks of jumping through hoops, I finally got a call from the company I wanted to go to work for, offering me the job! Then the recruiter was telling me about everything I needed to bring for orientation: Long sleeve shirt, non-skid footwear, birth certificate, social security card, CDL, logbook, etc... Standard fare. Then she started telling me what NOT to bring: No pets, no alcohol, no drugs, no ponytail...

"WHAT?!!! NO PONYTAIL?!! Uh, Ma'am, I have kinda' long hair and routinely wear it in a ponytail." Long pause...

"How long IS your hair?"

"Ummm... Almost to the middle of my back."

"Can you hold on and let me check something, sir?"

"Yes Ma'am." Another long pause...

"Sir, are you still there?"

"Yes Ma'am, I'm here."

"Sir I'm sorry but your hair can be no longer than collar length. Is that going to pose a problem?"

"Uh, yes Ma'am, I'm afraid it might."

"I'd really like for you to come to work for us."

"Yes Ma'am. And I'd really like to come to work for you... But I really don't want to cut my hair."

"It'll grow back."

"Yes Ma'am. Tell you what - Let me talk things over with my wife and I'll get back to you."

"Ok sir."

So now I've lost two weeks in my job search because somehow I never dreamed that my "ideal company" would have a policy against long hair.

Damn! I was really close!
that mate is discrimination dont know what the industrial laws are like over there but here the company would have been hung out to dry your hair mate, your choice I'd never work for people like that,Idrive trucks and am the oldest scruffiest but the boss knows I get the job done and thats the bottom line
