Going the wrong way.

Earlier this week I had a passenger who wanted to go the southwest corner of the city. I proceeded to drive him in that direction but when I made my last turn to head west to the final intersection he challenged me, saying I was going in the wrong direction. He wanted me to go east.

I told him I was not going in the wrong direction. That, in fact, I grew up in this area and knew exactly where I was going. when we got to his destination he appoligized saying he didn't understand how he became confused.

On my way back to the taxi stand I realized neither one of us was correct. It didn't matter whether I turned right *or* left at the crucial intersection.

Can anyone tell me why?

maybe because right or left, you would have still been in the south-west corner of the city ? somehow I think that is going to be too simplistic laugh

Presumably the "crucial intersection" was the destination so any direction from there was the wrong way??

confused

No, what I was actually thinking was that, since the earth is round even if I had turned left instead of right I would have been heading towards the same destination. I would, however, have had to circumnavigate the globe in order to get him to his destination that way and I think he might have grumbled about the cost.

As it turned out, the fare was about $11. If I had gone the other way.... let's see, where's my calculator.... assuming the circumference of the earth is 25000 miles or 25k * 1.6 = about 40,000 km.... and assuming there *was* a road all the way round, it would have cost him 40,000 km * $1.40 per km = $56,003 for the same trip.

Man, I would love to have a fare like that. Any takers?

Your "intersection was circular highway or 'loop' as we call it here in the states alot. If you take a left at the top of the loop you are going west and take a right and you are going east. Either way you can get to the southwest section. Taking a left gets you there quicker. (Note: the opposite is true if you were at the bottom of the loop.)
