Never been bit, but came close once. I was belly-crawling through the sagebrush and cactus trying to sneak up on a buck antelope. I peeked around some sage near a prairie dog mound and came face to face with a five footer! Darn near messed my drawers! By the way, when you belly crawl backwards really fast...its hard to avoid the cactus!

D'oh!

He must have been cold and sluggish because he never moved. Just kept sticking his tongue out at me. So, I made a slight detour and went right back to the truck to find my tweezers. Don't do much belly-crawling anymore. Unless there's snow on the ground!

wow!

Absolutely terrified of snakes. I do a lot of hiking and spend a lot of time outdoors in the unpopulated parts of the countryside. And I'm about as white as they come. I come upon them way too often and I hate it.

By the way, my favorite hiking partner is a 6'4" ,235 lb black man. When we come upon a snake of any kind he squeals and hollars like my grand daughter and runs the other way. It's always an effort to get him back on track.
Where did the idea that black people aren't afraid of snakes come from?
Hey neighbor!!

Hi hrt4lse. You know the snake situation up here, I'll bet. Even the river trail can be crawling with them in the summer.
Nice to see a neighbor!

So far the only ones I've come across are the ones in my yard. On Veteran's Day I went hiking up at Whiskeytown trying to find Boulder Creek & didn't run across any. Read later about bears & mtn. lions...lol...wondering if it was a smart thing to do to go by myself...lol

I wouldn’t even come close to thinking of roaming around the vast wilderness of Boulder Creek. There, you will find more than just snakes bears and mountain lions.

Hey hrt4lse,
I go hiking at Whiskeytown all the time. Just did the Boulder creek falls about a month ago when we went thru that little cold snap. No snakes when its cold. That's something I learned a long time ago.
Just did the Whiskeytown Falls hike, too. Every step uphilluh oh! but worth it.
I don't worry about the animals. They will usually take off and hide when they hear us even before we know they are there.
