Why do seemingly "normal" people like to hunt?

I live in an area where there is lots of hunting...deer, moose, bear, birds....fishing too.

Most of the hunters never bag anything. I've seen three deer and one moose taken in this neighborhood this year.

Some just like hunting....going out in the woods with their buddies, going to hunting camp.

The locals usually eat what they kill, especially deer.

Being able to feed your family if the grocery stores close is not a bad skill, I think dunno

I am sure it is in the genes, hunter mentality conveys surviourship.
I dont like hunting for animals, but I like to hunting for bargains at
yard sales, auctions and bankruptcy sales. grin

When I was growing up every kid over 14 had a rifle that his dad taught him how to use and respect. Many times, if we didn’t hunt, we didn’t eat meat. Every shot had to be fatal because bullets cost money. It's called growing up poor in Mississippi..............
I was raised to believe that if you kill something~You eat it!
Hunting shows & people who hunt for trophy's just piss me off.

In response to:
Ok so I'm a hypocrite. I do eat meat but if I had to hunt for it I'd be a vegetarian. When I eat meat I'm not thinking about the fact that I'm eating an animal. I would like to try and give it up but I do love chicken and beef :( I just don't understand when hunters tell me they love nature and bucks are beautiful animals. So why do they enjoy killing them?????
It is better that the deer/rabbit whatever, get hunted and eaten rather than hit by cars. Living in Michigan, deer literally litter the highway and the roads getting hit. I would much rather see a deer shot feeding a family, then a deer hit killing one.

"Normal" is a rather relative term I have found. Perhaps a lot of them simply like to kill things that can't shoot back....I tried it a few times and found no sport in it at all. Left it for only when needed while in the service. Found a better thing to "hunt" animals with: a camera; that takes much more stealth and the animals get to live....

this will sound sexist! But I believe men are natural hunters. And natural predators. it's in out DNA. Personally I could kill a man before an animal..but I never said i was normal

So Hunting ain't quite "Normal" Then.
I used to do quite a bit of Spear Fishing when I lived in the Westindies.
No ,not with a Speargun, they're outlawaed, nope with a simple Hawaiian Sling.
But if you kill it,you eat it.
A Friend here in Zurich does Hunting all over Western and Eastern Europe. The Family name would be familiar to many if I posted it,suffice it to say,he is able to afford it,while I am not.
Hunting here in Europe is a Rich Man's Sport, poor Saps like me can only dream about it.
I couldn't afford the Lease if I tried.

As an aside :That Fellow is a Vegetarian!!!!!laugh conversing wave

Honestly...I think it comes purely from the hunter and gatherer instinct...where we used to have to hunt to survive...It's obviously something that is more prominant in some vs. others!!!!!!!

thumbs up
