Is it possible to be an intellectual and lack compassion?

I would think, intellect should lead one to be more accepting, understanding and tolerant.......

It would equip you with knowlege that everything (or everyone) has a roles or reason for existence.............

...............and the recognition that no human being is perfect (no one knows everything), we are all "work in progress"

thumbs up

Precisely!!!!!

Absolutely. Look at Kissinger. Look at William Buckley. Look at Lenin. But intellectuals as a group are no colder than anyone else. I think there's an idea floating around in our culture, and maybe in parts of this thread, that there's some sort of either/or dichotomy between the head and the heart, that being smart works against being kind and vice versa. And that's not true. Brains and compassion can and do interact like each hand washing the other.

Its up to us to use our intellect in a comapssionate manner while putting forth our views. Intellect gives us the capacity to reason and think beyond imposed logic and reason and so wit hit comes the understanding of the unknown and the need to let the truth be known. But goes without saying , as all of us might not be blessed equally with such a superiority of thought , to share and to grow is but a pleasure.
So compassion and kindness ar eby their absence an obstacle in the path of sharing the reason and knowledge.

Learning for learnings sake is pointless, empty and vain.

It can be an ego trip.

We NEED to temper any intellectual leanings we may have with a healthy appreciation for our fellow man.

Without love, we are nothing!
your life isn't our own,
without other people it belongs to misery
that colorful array of sounds
is our reason for being
dont look to the dark side
look to the bright
the signature of every picture

I agree (again!smile)

we all share the dark side of human nature.. u know the greed and selfishness etc.. its our personal quirks and spirit, which make us special and unique...

A dismissive mind is not a powerful intellect.

The two would be incompatible.

There's been several heavy threads recently dealing with quite involved, and somewhat controversial topics. Many words have been written and very deep, intellectually vibrant concepts and views put forth.

It got me thinking.

I strongly believe that it is vital to temper intellectual focus with love and compassion, or else it simply becomes a fruitless exercise in cold, dispassionate, self absorbtion.

Empty and vain.

Why do I see it this way?

Look around at the world...there's plenty of knowledge...lots of 'great' minds at work, but where is the compassion and love?

We need intellectually capable minds, we need to keep on learning about 'why' and 'how' and 'if'. But all this is pointless without some sort of positive fellow feeling.

Indeed it could be said that love and compassion might be the lubricant to intellectualisms engine.

Just had to spew this out...be well people!
thumbs up cheers
