It is harder to scam people in real life...but you don't know if you are being scammed online until that glorious face-to-face moment.

And the part about people being better when they meet .. its happened to me at times .. but with friends of course.. and its such a pleasant feeling.

I can only guess he was either married, or very insecure of what you would think of him in person? Just 2 guesses. As to the not calling or responding to your voice mails, I can only assume he was scared of the reaction/confrontation that could ensue.
