The death of my ex-wife's uncle on Christmas eve and the death of a friend 5 years younger than me....about 3 weeks ago does give a perspective to what life is~

Life, why, it is is fractal eternity
all of sentience

all of all

I will never ever forget what a great German genius once said:

‘Life is a useless episode disturbing the blissful repose of nothingness.’

Life is that which pertains to grouped, self replecating cell structures that are able to self sustain for a period of time.

Energy is not life in my view...energy is activity or potential activity.

And so all of all is not life, as so much of 'all' is inanimate and inconnected.

Life inplies living...the ability to fulfill some sort of purpose, however inane.

Just my own thoughts.wine

Indie, much as I respect your words just now - my opinion is that it gives a perspective to what life is at the moment - but for yourself, you are the one going through this just now, the perspective is something 'you' are learning - for you, it is you who has to deal with this

Since I beleive ALL life is/has energy, my thoughts lean toward transformation in respect of growth. I don't think conciouosness is necessarily needed because all life has energy. Even plants and animals experience it and grow or should I say evolve.

We humans have conciousness though I have no proof that animals and other living things do or do not, but they certainly have instinct as do we.

So life is growth for me.. pointing toward death and then rebirth/transformation as something else (dont ask what I think that is) ... energy can't be created, cant be destroyed, it is only transformable.

Ray, life is the parasitic/symbiotic realtionship our cells share with the bacteria which maintain our incapable bodies. Tht and and electric field somewhere in the range of 7 or 8 hz (not sure the exacting specifics here but Tesla knew).
Awareness would have prodded a much deeper answer but I gave this all I believe it is.
