Most seriously...

I use to write all the time, then I feel a bit disappointed with the answer I am going to give to you... Because sometimes I need noises around, not only the street's ones, but for example, I love to write sitting in a bar, hearing people voices sound and the underground music chosen by the staff...At home I listen to music which bring my mind in a way of thinking on a different level...Other times, I really need blank silent moments... My imagination seems to be pushed by sounds sometimes and starves for the silence on other instants. It just depends on what I write. But most precisely on my mood.
I never thought about what you say about noises and intelligence, I know few of them disturb me but I also like very much "the sound of silence".

thumbs up

go with the flow ...

this is what I mean as well Ray ... the more you fight noise and attempt to turn it off the more it annoys ... the real secret is to find its flow.

For your particualr understanding ... consider the 'equal force in the opposite direction happens in any energy scenario... resistence is futile.. yes?

Pick up on the flow, find your place in it.

cheers

There is actually proven support on the music front to support your assertions at least to music.. People of higher learning, (book learning) tend to like classical music for its intricate and fuller tones, not to mention the intricacy of scoring music of that nature.

Counrty and rap music lovers tend to be much more the emotional type, people who don't care much for books unless theyre romance novels, they are about feeling life, experience life from an emotional bent.

Rock and rollers lie somewhere in the middle, due to wide variety of rock music and intricacy of the melodies.

Not sure about the noise Ray, but there are ways to shut it out, even tune in to it and make it part of the landscape of your mind so to speak, so that it is not so much a noise that bothers but a noise that soothes.

For me, I like noise as long as it has some consistency, a beat or rythym if you will, frantic noise or noise that comes and goes with no rythym is what bothers me.

thumbs up Hey that was a cool reply: thanks B!

Yeah, it is the noises that have no consistency that detract one's attention and upset and annoy!

I agree 100% with no noise while studying !! It drives me mad !! That kind of study is pointless to me.

Apart from that noise , tolerable ? ok , a little overboard - i mentally switch it off .

complete silence would be worse I am afraid.

conversing

Personally I think it is best for you to be in a distracting enviroment, the more noise the better.

It may help drown out those voices in your head urging you to anti social behaviour!

Second Childhood Ray

Absolute silence would be more disracting than common noise

A suggestion would be a 'wall' of 'white noise'

I see the voices in your head are now posting here, talking about colored lights
