Is it a cruel murder by the state or a just punishment?

Can it be a deterrent to crime?

taking a life can been justified by war, religion, by defending your property, protecting family and others.

lets not forget the power of "an example."

sure many have been found innocent, but technology has advanced greatly since those times.

If an animal kills a human its executed... is it still not a lifeform?

death sentences in U.S are a joke most wait ten to 15 years before it ever occurs some die of old age awaiting the penalty.

sure Texas has speeded up the process of executions

how'd that one comedian put it "While the rest of America is dragging its feet on death penalty, Texas has put in an express lane."

Am i for death penalty only if politicians are held to the same standards.

they make the laws, they should be as answerable to them as those they pass the law for....when someone makes a decision and lives are lost and it was proven by a jury of their peers unjustified.

The death penalty is not a deterrent.. as long sentences aren't a detterent to Drug Lords... people who do heinous acts that you speak of are either not right in the head or fanatics!!.. the Death Penalty existed in almost all Criminal Law Jurisdictions in the world at one time or another.. it never made a difference, that is why in the last number of decades, most jurisdictions have abolished it..

I disagree. I know what happed in South Africa when the death penalty was abolished. It is most certainly a deterrent.

In fact, if there is anything execution is NOT, it is a punishment. Since one can learn nothing from it, therefore it is ONLY - in this sense - a deterrent. And a clarification in the mind of mankind of what is NOT tolerated.

Am firmly against the Death Penalty.. read Helen Prejean Death of Innocents.. even if who she refers to represent a small minority of people who face death row.. the price is far too high...imagine being locked up in your room/apartment/house (with all the amenities) for 6 months and not being allowed to go outside the door.. multiply that by 80 and picture having to do it in a grey stone building with basic facilities.. prison is punishment enough.. and at least if the person does turn out to be wrongly convicted they can walk out alive
'prison is punishment enough.. and at least if the person does turn out to be wrongly convicted they can walk out alive'

Let us also not forget that a mistake in the administration of the death penalty is not a justification for abolishing the death penalty itself.

That is like saying that if someone can be punished by mistake for something they didn’t do, then that is justification to abolish the punishment.

Why don’t we abolish imprisonment itself on these grounds, since people can be wrongfully imprisoned for the rest of their life?

In fact, someone who has been in prison for twenty years and is innocent is far more likely to mind . . . than someone who was innocent and was executed.

Maybe gallows humor is not appropriate for this thread, nevertheless – there it is.

Remember Derek Bently the last guy in Britain killed by the death penalty. He was later found to be innocent and what if the Birgmingham 6 and Guilford 4 had been given the death penalty?.

The death penalty is wrong and must be abolished.
Ok, so I am going to take this to the far extreme now....

You say that the death penalty should be abolished...lets say that it has been...

so now, we have the prision system that is already overflowing and in danger of bursting at the seams...now we are going to throw in the ppl that were at one time sentanced to die for their crimes into the mix....

as tax payers, we pay for the health care, food, clothing, cable, attorney costs, wieghts for them to work out with, water, gas, electric and anything else that the prisonier needs..

while my tax dollars are paying for this criminal, who could not abid by the laws that govern the state, country and world that the rest of us law abiding citizens live in...I am struggling to pay for my water, gas, electricity, put food on my table for my family and attempt to improve my life....

but that now becomes impossible, why you are asking, because the criminal has more rights than a law abiding citizen does...and it is becoming worse every day...

think on that, and then let me know if you believe that it is FAIR to the average person who does not break the law to have to suffer and have to pay for someone that has broken the law and most likely if given the chance, will break the law again...

just something to think about...

why would the death penalty be a deterrant ??

why do so many inprisioned ppl try to commit suicide??

cos its a way out ....... cos it is preferable to being locked up for years and years, or forever

scrap the death penalty and make life mean life

Agreed its more punishment but costs too much of my $ keeping them alive. Now if they had to somehow pay for their own existance im all for it.

a lot of studies show that the death penalty costs a whole lot more than keeping ppl in prison

just one study i found

Total cost of death penalty is 38% greater than total cost of life without parole sentences. (Indiana Criminal Law Study Commission, January 10, 2002)

that makes you no better than the criminals we are talking about
which makes the state criminals too

for taking a life

for planning to take a life

in fact it makes them guilty of the very thing they abhor

premeditated murder

it just continues the cycle of violence and murder

they become the killers

I'm saying it's american politics that makes it cost more $ to kill a criminal (if that IS even the case) then keep em alive on my $ for 40+ years. That is not possible. Let's be logical. And I won't charge anything to stick em in the arm with a needle. BTW It only costs $50-$100 for an animal. So are veterinarians murders?

from the american civil liberties union website

As of February 2004, 113 inmates had been found innocent and released from death row. More than half of these have been released in the last 10 years. That means one person has been exonerated for every eight people executed.

A study by Columbia University professor James Liebman examined thousands of capital sentences that had been reviewed by courts in 34 states from 1973 to 1995. ""An astonishing 82 percent of death row inmates did not deserve to receive the death penalty,"" he said in his conclusion. ""One in twenty death row inmates is later found not guilty.""

The vast majority of those exonerated were found innocent because someone came forward to confess committing the crime; key witness testimony was found to be illegitimate; or new evidence was found to support innocence
