Like many here I'd have to say cat - I love cats, they are so independent, yet when they are mothers, they care for their young, protect and nurture their cubs/kittens. The teach them how to defend themselves...

Yet they are independent, loyal, always try to go after what they want and can defend themselves with their nice sharp nails.
