A lot have been left out from early Rock % Roll, the Blues players; many of whom were highly influencial in inspiring or teaching quite a few in your list besides B.B. King; Bo Didley, Duane Eddy, Link Wray,John Lee Hooker,Jimmy Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Mississippi John Hurt and so many more that shaped the best of right now...or so I think. %)
Bobby G too.yay Riley and he are two of the tops.

They are all great guitarist
all with their unique style
but because they all have their own style they really cant be compared
unless you mean greatest as in most popular

alot of the guitarist mentioned really arent that talented they just look good
or played in a band and had a great hit song

there are so many great ones that havent been mentioned

guitarist like john petrucci
paul gilbert
Michel romeo
all great guitarist
but arent really that famous
unless you are a guitarist yourself

Hands down Hendrix, he set the standard and was way ahead of his time. Clapton was actaully in awe of some of the things Jimi was doing for the time period. Clapton gets a vote also but as someone else said depends on the music and alot of great players are not listed. IMO one of the most underrated players is David Gilmour, keeps making pretty good music today and never seems to get any accolades for it.

A lot of great ones named and perhaps he wasn't the best of the bunch, but I can't help but think of George Harrison and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Being an apprentice guitar player for thirty five years has lead me to appreciate what it takes to be a great guitar player. It is more than what meets the eye. I could never hope to arrest the attention of generations such as the great ones have. They transcend boundaries and move hearts. They are inspirational.

With that said, and with no disrespect to the multitude of talent out there, I would have to say that my favorites are David Gilmour and Eric Clapton.

head banger

The word "fan" seems to lack substance under these circumstances, but your point is well taken.

It's hard to decide, but I'll throw out Dean Ween from the experimental (and f'n awesome) band Ween. He does stuff that I've never heard, yet makes it interesting....head banger
