I think its funny, in a really sad way, how people feel if they don't believe something to be true, then it must not be. Like they can prove the law of gravity wrong by believing if they jump off a tall building they will not fall. If it's true, then what you believe is irrelevant.
Now the question of eternal flames is very interesting indeed. What is really burning in hell? Is it your physical body? Or your eternal soul? Since your body is not eternal, believing it will burn forever doesn't make much sense. But your soul, or spirit as some want to call it, is a different story.
Most people don't like the idea that they will have to pay for the wrong things they have done in life. They like the idea of someone who has done worse than they have (like a thief or a murderer) being held accountable for that person's actions, but not themselves. "I'm not that bad." or "I haven't done really bad things." or "There are a lot that are worse than me." seems to be their only defense.
Or some just want to think that if there is a God, he will have mercy on them. But if he has mercy on everyone that wants it, then what good is he. What if no one has to pay for what they have done, no matter how bad it was? Everyone got off scot free. I kinda think of God as perfect. And yes, though that would make Him perfectly merciful, it would also make Him perfectly just. And if His justice was perfect, then could he let anyone off for their offenses. Would a judge, who let any criminal go free for no reason, be considered perfect?
I am not going to go into the whole heaven and hell discussion now because most people can't handle it. There is an incredible mystery about heaven that many people miss. Sadly many people sitting in churches this sunday will miss heaven because they don't know what it is.
If you have decided not to agree with me because you just don't want to, then there is nothing I can do to change your mind. But if your open minded, and would like to discuss it more, I am more than glad to.
