In response to:
In a society where everyone is "entitled to their opinion", what place is there for right and wrong?
We function in so many different arenas.
on a personal level, every opinion is just that. An opinion. We either agree or we disagree.
In a work environment right and wrong are shaped by the culture and requirements of the company. Again, agree or disagree but the company reserves the "right" to enforce its rules. If you abide by the rules it has a responsibility to follow through with a paycheque.
Society at large is yet another arena with another set of fairly arbitrary rules and so on ad infintum.
I think it is wrong to kill. I would kill you in a heartbeat (if capable) if you were trying to kill me.
so even our own positions on what is 'right' and what is 'wrong' shift relative to circumstance.
And as roseofsharon points out if having "my opinion" leaves me unwilling to discuss or entertain the possibility that there is another way of reaching the same conclusion...well I am going to be a very boring person with no opportunity for growth or development.
Oh, and this is just another of those opinions!
Very good thread.
