Would you want a convicted sex offender in your neighborhood?

Have you ever researched the net to find out if a sex offender lives in your neighborhood?

Do they?

What would be your reaction?

I have serious issues with the whole sex offender registry.

19 year old boy has sex with his 15 year old girlfriend = sex offender.

Father molests his 3 year old daughter = sex offender.

Man violently rapes a woman with a broom handle = sex offender.

Man in office flips a co-workers bra strap = sex offender.

And I get the exact same notification if any single one of them moves into my neighborhood.

However,
a woman suffocates her infant to death, or a man kicks his dogs in the ribcage until it dies of internal bleeding, or a man breaks into a house and hits a little old lady in the head with a frying pan....

I get no notification.

Something seriously wrong with the whole sex offender registry if you ask me!

i agree there are flaws in the system. However, if you have children, would you want a convicted pedophile for a neighbor?

I can agree girl and curly you are right, the system is flawed. But just to play devils advocate a momnet, how is a sex offenders right to privact any less important then any other violent offender?

Believe me, I have absolute disgust and no tolerance for "true" sex offenders and I am in know way defending them. But it is a question of taking one groups rights away and not anothers.

Just a question to think about.

girl is correct

guy in my neighborhood
which is verry verrry small-
2000 ppl-1/2 are kids
convicted of such after lessening other crazy charges from ex wife
who was psych institutionalized shortly thereafter
and he was granted custody-
this is 3 yrs ago-things are fine but he is registered-
how much would that suck?

ive also known 19 yr olds having been involved w/ girls a few yrs younger
parents get angry-even if they were dating before he was 18?
doesnt make sense-
then put him in jail

this is vastly different than pedophilia

but then im always against sweeping generalizations
or sweeping anything really
you should see my kitchen floor

We simply don't need to spend additional tax money on a bias notification system like this.

We already have the information. It's called Public Record.
You can go to the courthouse (or heck, in most places sit at home on your computer) and access the felony records of any of your neighbors.

Someone new moves into the neighborhood and you want to know if they are an offender, take the time to access the system that is already in place.

That's part of the problem Girl. In today society everyone wants someone else to do it for them, be it government or another person. This country has become lazy, lacking any kind of work ethic. There have been to many genrations that think they are owed something from birth.

as to the question would i want a convicted pedophile as a neighbor?

number one
i am responsible for my child and my child has been built for many years
in many ways to be safe from such dangers from the inside out.
not an infallible system but a responsibility i took on
as a concerned parent in an unsure world-tho nothing is foolproof.

it seems identified that the types of children victimized
have some things going on or not going on in their lives
that make them vulnerable-more so than others-
there is a 'type' predators seek out-thats why they are called predators they have a keen eye-and a formula, just like an animal predator.
they arent running thru the mall grabbing up kids..?

number two-
i may want what i want, or who i want for neighbors,
but ive no right to and cannot in fact, control the world

weve already covered that a registered offender
may be a trumped up charge
the memos we get from sheriff's dont generally tell details

my reaction would be that a watchful eye is different than a spying eye
and that i am not the police. this person has people they must report to
and the consequences will be there if they dont fulfill that committment.

ill be darned if im gonna make em feel like they have the plague
but i may not invite them in for pie and coffee either,
but there is a neighborliness and general respect i can extend.

but im a weirdo-and really into non reacting-im not god or the cops

however if people dont stop throwing trash in the creek
im gonna start picketing
thats really pissin me off lately
WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE-very mad

mindful, You make some very good points.

I too have raised my child in a fashion that although it won’t guarantee he is never victimized, it will reduce his chances. Don’t talk to strangers. Open communication in the home. Understanding there are bad people in the world. Carry a quarter to call home. Safety in numbers. Etc….

Additionally, the majority of children who are victimized by pedophiles already had a relationship with the perpetrator. Many were relatives, close family friends, religious leaders, or sports coaches. Very few children are victimized by strangers who just moved in the neighborhood.

And true too we don’t choose our neighbors. If I could choose mine, I wouldn’t have the ones I have now for sure! And realistically, for all I know, the neighbors down the way could be molesting their sheep every night. Who knows?

Another thing that no one has mentioned is… most of the people on a sex offender registry have already paid their debt to society. Do we really want to shift back into a paradigm in which people are red lettered for the remainder of their lives?
