Would you want a convicted sex offender in your neighborhood?

Another thing that no one has mentioned is… most of the people on a sex offender registry have already paid their debt to society. Do we really want to shift back into a paradigm in which people are red lettered for the remainder of their lives?

THis is why I posed the question of their rights as opposed to the rights of any other offender or citizen for that matter.

I will certainly agree with regard to parenting. Again another problem in today's world, parents don't want to parent.

I check the sex offender list on line monthly....all violent crimes are nasty agreed... pedophilia, that concerns me greatly, they are sneaky and go after innocent and helpless...i do and check whatever I can to keep my kids safe.

yeah sex offenders whose main target are children...yep they are people and should have a place to live as they are so-called humans...do i care of their safety and well-being, no not so much.

garschk
i hate it when i double post but it happens

ah well

yes the victims are generally disenfranchised kids
these same kids are vulnerable to gangs
they do not get enuf love or attention
they have no connection w/ a healthy adult
(which means the child would be the general priority, as should be,
and gives them a sense of value, as they should have)
you see adults that didnt get those building blocks everywhere you turn...

we have a society of latch key kids, drunk parents,
immature selfish parents, severely distracted parents
trying to fill their own soul hole...
a few generations of parents forcing their kids to hug and kiss people
and /or family members, which teaches them right there that they have no ownership of their bodies, the adult rules.

also that attention from the 'wrong' person becomes love
and anything they want from the child they will do, they know no better and feel they would die w/o that love -which is why they often
protect the abuser-the same dynamic happens in family...
plus they dont want it to be their fault-and many bad parents
or peds plant that seed-that if things go awry its because
the kid told...

role playing is a great tool-kids have to learn to scream
NO HELP THIS IS NOT MY PARENT-scream it-
which w/o practice will never happen
also a code word is necessary for someone picking you up from somewhere saying its a favor they were asked to do by the guardian.

there are so many stop gaps to put in place to help a child feel empowered rather than fearful
(believe me they know it happens whether or not you discuss it with them-its like all matters-do i want me to be the source or a misinformed fearful, bigoted world?)
i dont care who moves in-ive done the footwork
and god will cover the rest

I know someone who is listed as a "Sex offender" and his crime was so frivilous. he urinated after a bar closed call in the alley behind a bar. they wrote his citation for public exposure (flashing). The poor fool did not hire an attorney to represent him ...and 5 years later he's still on the "Offenders list " for taking a piss. It has effected his opportunity for good gainful employment.

All those convicted of crimes should have the same consequences./ repercussions I'd also like to know what other convicted criminals are in my neighborhood. especially convicted drug dealers/user, thieves (all types).

And Yes I have checked the list occassionally

maybe the Kthru 6 elementary schools should post pictures of offenders, how many kids at that age even know enough to check out an Offenders website.
after all they claim the reason they are on the public accessible list is to inform and protect

the extinction may be overdue goose-
laugh

anyway hi fireliterwave

you reiterate the point very well

its madness but they get to add each 'conviction' to the pile of bureaucratic success and help that sheriff in the next election

sick sick sick
and unfair to the citizenry at large-
both to the victim of the trumped up charge
and the public at large who is fearful of these 'boogie men'
and their numbers that increase so rapidly just cause more fear

crappy

thats a lovely sentiment
but the majority of the thread has been not in favor of such lists,
for well reasoned and thoughtful responses

also thats a violation to post another site...of any kind

this is the knee jerk reaction we have been discussing here
and how it may not be the best way to filter or respond to information.

? did you have time to read the thread yet?

just curious
please dont blow a gasket

Hi mindful.

if indeed this List is truly intended to be helpful then schools should hand out fliers to the students to take home even perhaps make it more readily accessible...

NEWS FLASH.....not every parent or adult owns or even can operate a computer.
Come election time they sure can run the list on TV and take credit for compiling the List.

Way more could be done to inform parents and neighborhoods than a Website... its a start but that site has been available for years and thats the extent that they have gone... appears the mission to inform the public has stalled, in my neighborhood anyway.

Yes, there are many things as parents we do to protect "our" children, listed are important ones. I've talked, I've explained..have done as much as I can possibly do, and much of my life and faith are with God...but I still care who moves in and out...it only takes one time, and I'm not willing to take the chance...so the more help, the more publicity, the more rules and laws are okay with me...

fireliter...I think it is a good idea for the school to be more active with info and handing out flyers for the families and children to have a clearer idea of who is lurking around them.

I attended PTA' meeting when my children where younger. I have heard that those Parent teacher associations and meeting get little attendance until after a crisis has occurred .

parents today more so than 30 years ago need to be more proactive than reactive when a child's education, safety, and health are concerned.
,
be careful of the common excuse of the Board of education"lack of funds."

Unfortunately, those who HAVE "paid their debt" will always carry that "red letter". That's just how society as a whole reacts to past mistakes. (example---a felon cannot buy a hand gun even if his/her offense is non violent, which is unconstitutional)

Although, Pedofiles, mass/multi murderers, child and woman beaters, etc., SHOULD be red lettered. These particular "Monsters" are statistcally repeat offenders, and in my opnion should be put in a room with angry parents and beat to death with a ping pong paddle (because that would take a while). I sound harsh, but they should get what they deserve for emotionally destroying a child like that.

Believe me, if someone did somthing to MY children, I would, WITHOUT A DOUBT, take things into my own hands. (I'd save the tax payers a ton of money)

BRING BACK PUBLIC EXECUTIONS!!!!!!

I see your point here, and for the most part, I tend to concur.

However, I still stand by my belief that red-lettering a man for flipping someone's bra strap with the same red-letter we use for a pedophile (which is what the sex-offender registry does), is nothing less than excessive, overreactive, and deplorable.
It not only makes the brastrap flipper have to live with a stigma he does not deserve, but it also minimizes the severity of the trauma a pedophile causes.
I have a difficult time putting them in the same category as "sex offenders". I can't possibly condone that they should both carry equal societal stigma.

I'm surely not talking about the bra strap flipper or the public urinator. I'm talking about the real sick ones.

I absolutely agree that the "sex offender" prerequesits need to be more specific. Like the guy who goes to a bar and picks up a chick....they have a romp in the hay and she turns out to be a minor. Are we to expect everyone to ID a potential mate, especially in a BAR? I would assume that she was of age, wouldn't anyone? So why should that horney guy be labeled as an offender? TO me, it's not his fault.

Devil's advocate

Sex offenders too need a place to live ............they have already paid for their crime through serving jail time.

If the have truly reformed, we should welcome them back and try and integrate them back into society. Having their posters all over makes it difficult for them to truly live a normal life......I think that pushes people back to crime eventually
