Actually the behavoir could be learned in both ways, someones envoirnment could lead to an addiction.

My only knowledge of alcoholism and or mental illness is from family who do or have suffered from them.

You are on the right track I'm sure. Any addiction at it's core, is an "emotional illness". Even person's who have never tasted alcohol, or any other illicit substance can suffer from addiction their entire lives, undiagnosed, and completely unconsciously.

The most sophisticaed pharmacy that can be found anywhere, is the hypothalamus in the human brain. Every single emotional state, that we can experience begin there as chemicals, called neurotransmitters, and neuropeptides. These chemicals are released into the blood stream, and distributed to the cells.

All of our cells are fitted with specific receptors for the different neuropeptides, or chemical emotions if you will. It has been proven, that after repetitive emotional patterns, anger for example...A person is angry day after day, after day...When a cell in that person replicates, it divides in two, and the new cell is "born" with more receptors for the "anger chemical", and less for other nutrients. So then, each of us can quite literally become addicted to our own emotional states.

I think alcoholism is an self induced disease that is feed by craiving once the body needs it. I know what your saying about no control over cancer, but if you shot cancer into your body or by smoking it would still be a disease.

I believe that is still undetermined at this point.

"Knowledgeable" statement!

Alcholism is not a disease, it is a persons way of coping out of reality. That is my opinion of it. I know some who use alchol as a substitute for something they are missing in there life. Alchol is just like drugs. Not healthy for you, addictive and just plan bad.

No my dear, I have not. It "appears" I have given up everything else including relationships, I "deserve" one addiction..

Alcoholism is a mind setting, its only in your mind but once you encounter alcohol related illness thats the time your mind will change and you will shift into a different perspective in order to survive. So quit or never its your choice that the way you think. :) [quote
