You've tried and liked it and continued in an exagerrated fashion with the wrong motivation behind it; it's like overeating; like drug use, although with drugs I personally feel there is no reason to try it at all unless it's for medical reasons and temporarily. But with food and alcohol, some lose perspective, and become preoccupied, consumed

Ahhhh! You meant it's their own learned behaviour ... I misunderstood ... thought you meant learned behaviour from others around them ...

Instead of being sarcastic all you had to do was tell us that YOU actually have the PROPER MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE/TERMS and share it with us ... SIMPLE!!!!

My only knowledge of alcoholism and or mental illness is from family who do or have suffered from them.

Not that I'm an alcoholic, but you have over 5 million people who claim to be recovering from alcoholism through A.A. ,CLAIMING that it's an illness.I don't want to be the judge, but it seems hard to argue against them.I believe it's an EMOTIONAL ILLNESS,or if you will,I think alcoholics are spiritually sick.

You are on the right track I'm sure. Any addiction at it's core, is an "emotional illness". Even person's who have never tasted alcohol, or any other illicit substance can suffer from addiction their entire lives, undiagnosed, and completely unconsciously.

The most sophisticaed pharmacy that can be found anywhere, is the hypothalamus in the human brain. Every single emotional state, that we can experience begin there as chemicals, called neurotransmitters, and neuropeptides. These chemicals are released into the blood stream, and distributed to the cells.

All of our cells are fitted with specific receptors for the different neuropeptides, or chemical emotions if you will. It has been proven, that after repetitive emotional patterns, anger for example...A person is angry day after day, after day...When a cell in that person replicates, it divides in two, and the new cell is "born" with more receptors for the "anger chemical", and less for other nutrients. So then, each of us can quite literally become addicted to our own emotional states.

Precisely young lady, everyone chooses to share their opinions and thay have no clue what they are speaking off. Info on Alcoholism and other diseases is available online for anyone to research should they choose to gain knowledge.

Seven years ago I contracted cancer. After surgery, I wanted to know why. I researched it on the internet. Much to my surprise, my smoking and eating habits had very little to do with it...

I think alcoholism is an self induced disease that is feed by craiving once the body needs it. I know what your saying about no control over cancer, but if you shot cancer into your body or by smoking it would still be a disease.

I believe that is still undetermined at this point.

The more I read about this type of stuff, I'm beginning to realize that there is big money demand for biochemists today.

Is alcoholism a disease ? I know they say it is, but to me disease is something you have no control over, such getting cancer, where as is alcoholism, the person does have control over drinking or not drinking.
no one is forcing the person to take a drink, he has a choice, but when you get cancer, you had no control over getting cancer. what is your thought on it?
Alcholism is not a disease, it is a persons way of coping out of reality. That is my opinion of it. I know some who use alchol as a substitute for something they are missing in there life. Alchol is just like drugs. Not healthy for you, addictive and just plan bad.

According to an article published in Feb. 1998 in the Physician's News Digest titled "Managing Alcoholism as a Disease" by Thomas R. Hobbs, PhD, MD:

"...The American Medical Association endorsed the concept in 1957. The American Psychiatric Association, the American Hospital Association, the American Public Health Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the World Health Organization and the American College of Physicians have also classified alcoholism as a disease....the Joint Committee of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and the American Society of Addiction Medicine published this definition for alcoholism: 'Alcoholism is a primary chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, mostly denial. Each of these symptoms may be continuous or periodic.' "
