Anyone have stories to share that might help me decide where to go or stay in the Caribbean?

Sandy beach with turquoise water - prefer topless.

Are all inclusive trips better?

Thanks for any hints/suggestions.

Flying. I was told that Cruises are too confining. Not so?

What Cruises did you take?

Thanks!

Is there a particular area that you highly recommend or maybe one you advice to stay away from?

Hi not sure if you were responding to me, but Old San Juan is pretty during the day. Cobblestone streets and a lot of little shops. And believe it or not those run down shacks on the side of the road have the best food. The Island isn't that big. Once drove from one end to the other and back in 12 hrs. Just be careful at night and the bars in out of the way places. Can be unsafe. The rainforest is a great place also. It can be pouring raining and you won't feel anything. Any where in VI is great.

Martinique was always my favorite hang out. Topless beaches great food etc.

It has been some years since I visited but I used to stay at hotel de la marina across from Fort de France. Just a ferry ride away from the shopping and a two minute walk from a great beach.

Barbados is lovely but conservative, no topless beaches.

I loved Puerto Rico. Was there years ago while doing a cadet cruise in the Coast Guard. Would love to return to see more

Zee absolutest most tres chic are zee French Islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique! C'est magnifique, food iz terrific and the people there a joy. Very uninhibited yet very civilized!
That said, the Dominican Republic in very nice also; better tourist accommodations around Porto Plata in the north. Santo Domingo is crowded but nice...see the house/ home and cathedral where Columbus is buried.
Everything there is nice, even the mountain villages and the cock fights. Cale car rides up the mountains, flowers everywhere!
Cuba is /can be terrific, but you have to enter via Mexico to avoid the stamps in your passport....
The former British Islands are a bit too conservative and "stodgy"...staid...JMO...
hey, it's Carnival Time until March in Buenos Aires...Party Time 24/7 til March!! Very cheap, very wild! %D Bon Voyage!!

Thank you all for your replies/suggestions.

Seems like one trip won't be enough . .

I was leaning towards Guadeloupe and it sounds like its still a good choice.

My sister recommended Fantasy Island . . but the reviews I found said the sand fleas are extremely vicious. The thought of slathering up with bug repellent doesn't thrill me.

And anyway - what order would you apply them? Sunscreen first or bug repellent?

dunno

Bajanblue, I think you are lying about your locale. Not true that “Barbados is lovely but conservative, no topless beaches.” It is none of those things. It is filthy, the people are perverse with no morals to speak of, and not only do they have topless beaches there, the local women see nothing wrong in changing their clothes etc right there on ANY beach, and the men flip out their dicks and flash them at innocent passers by with no provocation at all.

My best advice to anyone going there would be to not bring anything you value, as the crime, especially theft IS THAT HIGH. Bring your own food if at all picky and don’t want a steady diet of bread fruit, flying fish and rotis. And be prepared for all the locals to not only come begging, but DEMAND that you give them something in a fairly hostile manner. If you wander at all from the tourist traps, watch your back! Yes, I did live and work there for a few years, and it was a total slice of hell. Those pics you see are always shots out to sea, and rarely ever do they dare show the inland shots, or you would see that most of the country looks like the worst of slums.

As far as where to find decent food in the country…stay away from the Crane Hotel, and whatever that other one is that has Ship in it’s name. The first was on Robin Leach’s list of the top 10 places in the world, and the food and service were both so bad I begged to get the hell out of there. The other was so disgusting we even got food poisoning. For real decent food go to “Holetown” on the “cheap side” (food is better, people are friendlier…) or to some of the authentic Chinese restaurants (I think one was called the Jade Palace, but not sure). Just be careful with your camera if you take one, vidcam too, because a LOT of them will flip out on you even if they aren’t turned on, as they are still so afraid that it will steal their soul. Not kidding, have a videotape of it I made myself (that and a lot of other things there) just because I wanted to PROVE what liars those travel agents are LOL

As far as the bugs and sunscreen, LOL get used to smelling like a combo of bay leaves, lemons and cinnamon, mixed with olive oil or cocoa butter. (I used the lemons in the yard to set my hair in place instead of hairspray to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.) Only concoction I ever found that kept the bugs off, and the sunburn.

The best place I ever found to be in the whole Country was Batts Rock. Kept me sane all those years.

Where ever you decide to go AVOID all inclusive!!!

If the food is crap, you've already paid for it.

You have a tendency not to ecplore, because everything is right there and it's so Americanized that you may as well just stay in florida.

It's bad for local business's which usually have much better and authentic food, with the bonus of getting to know some of the locals and seeing the island from their prespective.

When I went to Cozumel I avoided the tourist areas and met a lot of local people and got invited to parties and peoples homes for dinner. It was wonderful!

Thank you so much!

Makes all kinds of sense and you are right - we will want to eat at local places not stay at the hotel.

I really appreciate your input.

Thanks

Btw - what is that huge dark thing in the center of the inlet?

I went to Nassau on a cruise and loved it! White sand beaches, clear ocean water. Lots to do. I did parasailing which was a blast.

A word of advice. Stong sunblock everywhere. I used SPF30 and still got really tan though I didn't think about putting sunblock on my feet. I had major sunburn where my sandals didn't cover. Oops! The sun down there is pretty harsh!

Thank you. I probably would have forgotten the tops of my feet.

Its ironic. I am allergic to the sun but love it. I use SPF 45 and still tan.

Thanks again Dark1Angel8!
