From the options above, Kate Bush is my favourite...totally unique and UBER talented.bowing

I would suggest Elis Regina as an option also...totally enchanting and perfectly controlled.

The guitarists would tune their instruments to her voice, such was the perfection of her pitch!wow!

I'll curb my tongue and say, hmmm...you must have written that list in a hurry to leave out other names.

Comparing the four greats of jazz to your list is like comparing real Gelato with Dairy Queen's "ice milk". Any of these four could put those on your list to shame:

Ella Fitzgerald
Sarah Vaughn
Dinah Washington
Billie Holiday

And as for the pop/rock genre, most of the greatest singers are overlooked solely because of their size. I listen to singers for their voices, not their waistlines:

Martha Wash and Izora Armstead (The Weather Girls a/k/a Two Tons O' Fun)
Alison Moyet (Yaz/Yazoo, and solo)
Chaka Khan
Aretha Franklin
Annie Lennox
Björk
Linda Ronstadt

Don't get me wrong. Dusty Springfield and Kate Bush belong in the second group, but let's not rate them by #1 hits. "Best singer" is a matter of quality, not popularity.

Proof of that fact is Elvis Presley's popularity.
