My heart goes out to you.

You stood in your own power and let the no-good sonofabuck see that you weren't going to take anything off of him. He got scared. A man who truly stands in his own power is to be admired.
I've been hurt and used as a doormat from my ex-husband and from a couple of former loves. I took a couple of workshops that helped save me from going down a quick road of self-destruction. They literally saved my life. I learned about how to forgive those who had hurt me and to put my painful past behind me.
Like so many of the other folks have said, love sneaks up on you when you least expect it. The best thing you can do is learn to put your pain behind you back on that sad grunge train so that you don't carry it over into any new relationship.
Good Luck!
