I Quit.

Posted: Feb 19, 2008, 9:54 PM CST
Have you considered Chantix. It's the new(-ish) prescription medicine for quitting smoking. My mom, my aunt, my mom's best friend and her husband have all quit for over a year on it. They were the most die hard smokers I've known. All smoked over 40 years. They say it makes you feel like you don't even smoke, or you just had a cig and don't want another. I never thought I'd live to see the day my mom would quit, but she did!

If your attempt doesn't work cold turkey, consider this. Anyone heard anything negative about this Chantix???

That reminded me of an episode of South Park, where the boys get caught smoking. Rob Riener comes to South Park to take on the Big Tobacco Industy. They're on a tour of a tobacco plant, and all of the workers are dancing around, and singing like oompa-loompas while they make cigarettes. One verse of the song goes something like this.....If I die of cancer when I'm 80 it's okay! Who the hell wants to be 90 anyway?

good luck

My best friend and his wife are on their15th day now. He is using Chantix and she is going cold turkey and their both still alive!grin

He uses a plastic roller from a small computer printer to chew on.
Although I'm not sure if it's a good idea to chew plastic, maybe a dowel. I suggested they try using a worrystone to keep the hands busy, worth a try!

Good luck, I wish you the best!

Most importantly,it's kind of hard to preach and teach about health with a cigarette in your hand.

Tomorrow morning I will have my last cigarette. I promised myself years ago that if I ever woke up coughing, that I would quit. The minute I hit the shower, I begin the classic, "Smokers cough". I consider that to be my last warning. Not that I want to live to be 90, I just want to feel good when I wake up. I want to be able to smell things again, (I think if a Jackal wretched in my kitchen, I wouldn't even notice) leave alone not being able to taste food anymore.

I've been through this before, I know what to expect. This time I'll try not to kill anyone, or chase cars, snapping at their tires. I will not eat 24 chocolate bars a day nor fill up on pasta every time I crave a smoke. Good luck to me, I want to breathe again.
I am with you tomorrow. I have the patch and have been trying for a little while at a time now. Longest was six days last week. thumbs up yay

There is a book that claims that 'by the time you finish reading the book you will have quit without any side effects or regrets. It was written by someone that used to work for the FDA and focuses on the things that the tobacco industry does'nt want you to hear. ..However you must read the book.

In my own opinion, take is as you wish but subsatuting one drug for another or using the patch is not the answer but just another industry taking advantage of you and another organ that is put in danger. Drug companys are not very differnt than the drug pusher on the corner, to them it's just business.

Good luck and tell yourself to 'do what you have to do when you have to do it'

The patch really works..My daughter who smoked for 15 years and swore that she would never quit, had to quit due to asthma, so we started with the highest dose patch and every 2 weeks we went down to the next lowest level and within 6 weeks, she was through with cigarettes and now she can't stand to be around anyone who smokes because they smell VILE!...good luck to you.

Hey Paws when I quit back when I was around 27, I used a tape that was very helpful to me. It said we have to make a concious choice.
When you feel the urge to smoke don't try to run away from it. You say "I feel the urge to smoke a cigarette but I choose not to." it also said to write down the top five reasons you want to quit and the top five benefits you will gain. And while you are going through that urge which actually doesn't last very long to read what you wrote.
I would be around other people smoking and I would pull out my cards.
It worked for me and I just wanted to share that with you. Goodluck. hug

Quick and easy......Champix works by specifically targeting nicotinic receptors in the brain to reduce craving, and no other treatment works this way; it's produced by Pfeizer, have a look at the website.
I stopped smoking in less than one week.
At least look at the option before you say no.thumbs up
Good luck!
