In that case no. I would not even come close to pleasing God. I think it’s because I don’t believe in a punishing God.

I also don’t believe that my purpose in life is to please him. If he is perfect as many say he is, he does not need me or anyone else for that matter to remind him of how perfect he is.

And if God turns out to be some one who punishes because he was not worshipped they way He sees fit, then I would probably see Him as a selfish God that I would not want to worship.

I think you've raised an interesting point, Rickster. One thing I've observed is that there really isn't one homogenous "god," but rather many, many different concepts of god - even among people from the same religious sects. Every Christian that I've talked with, for instance, has a different vision of God. Some don't like the angry Old Testament "eat the children with a bear" dude - preferring the allegedly "free-lovish" Jesus - while other prefer the opposite...or any number of degrees in between.

The point I often attempt to make to my religious relatives is that we *do judge God*. We believe, in other words, in a god that suits are ethical beliefs (or psychological temperaments).

I have no guarantee what my fate will be as it is... I love God..and live my life in accordance what I think is right.. i.e. try to be a good and moral person, be a good christian that kind of thing... but I am also aware that it might not be enough... I am still trying to figure it all out and have no guarantee that I will find the answers.. but then thats love for ya unconditional... the thruth is not everyone will go to heaven whether they love God or not... we are required to live our lives in a certain way as it is...

having said all of the above though...if the consequence of serving god was punishment then that would be some 'other God' one which I cannot identify with...... so no!! smile wine

Well, that's what I'm getting at, Aries - that we follow a god because we think it benefits us. We wouldn't follow one where there was not only no reward, but actually a punishment.

Or so I would assume. Still waiting from others - most notably, perhaps, my dear nemesis on such points, Constanza.

My we're feeling introspective tonight...wave I don't believe in God per say, I live my life the way I do because it is the correct thing to do. There are laws that I break because I feel they serve no useful purpose, but I live my life in a way that does no harm to anyone else. If believing in God is the only way you get to heaven, if there is one... then I guess I'll be seeing a few of you in hell regardless of how we live our lives.

Reminds me of another question I've asked my religious friends/family, JB. "If you knew God didn't exist, how would that change your behavior? Would you suddenly feel inclined to perform evil acts?"confused laugh The answer is invariably no. The other part of that question is: "Are the things we do good and bad because a god says so, or because they are good/bad by another standard, which applies to god's actions as well?"

Often get rather pained and uncomprehending looks from my religious friends/family, btw. rolling eyes laugh

If I knew I would only go to hell in spite of what I did to change it. It is a done deal! Yes! I would try to obey God. Believe it or no!

I would love and do good for others even knowing they would never love me. Believe it or no!

I am that way....no bull! But if you give all to the poor, soon you are one of them and can help no one. I will not waste efforts on those who don't help themselves.

Christians and other religious-believers say that their main purpose is to serve God, and that they do things principally to please Him (or Her). That is, they are not acting with the idea of obtaining any reward.

Let's put that to the test: What if regardless of your actions to please God (or gods), you knew you would spend the rest of eternity in Hell (or a hellish place). Would you still then have any desire to please God?

In another thread I asked whether we would prefer to love knowing we would never be loved, or to be loved knowing we would never love in return?

The idea in both cases is whether we act fundamentally selfishly, or for the benefit of others.

Jeff

In pleasing God I find tranquility and self love; anything that steps outside those boundaries brings misery and defeat; a tree shall be recognized by its fruit. God is life, anything else is death; and I see others who are dead in life, including I myself was once dead in life, when my ways weren't righteous.

Ambrose answering a second half of your post which is:

"In another thread I asked whether we would prefer to love knowing we would never be loved, or to be loved knowing we would never love in return?"

I've chosen to be Loved not just because it makes my man to feel and to be the happiest human being in this ole World. But because seeing him content makes me feel great .... and what is Love afterall .... to make someone to be happy. Isn't it?
