What makes some people emigrate and embrace their host country never to return to their native one and others nostalgic of their own country and go back? Do they have different mindsets?

It appears there are about 20 million of them in the US with different mind sets. Some of them do embrace their home counties in the form of fleeing back when they are in trouble with the law.

Yeah the weather can be a bit testy, but after 45 years I'm getting used to it......

Since moving to the city I have really lost my patience for winter, I used to love it.

I liked it when I was a kid but grown to hate winter over the last 10 or 20 years.
London isn't all that bad compared to a lot of other places in Canada, like Edmonton. I've been there in the winter and I think it's almost livable!laugh

Isnt there a place in Canada, where people live & work mostly underground?

Saw a documentary a few years ago,

where there is the gigantic shopping center

come living quarters where quite a few thousand

live and work, have no car

as they never have a need to leave.

where is that?

I'm not aware of large numbers of people living under ground.

i miss London but after two and a half years of contract work I left a ten year relationship behind and packed up for home coz I got tired of the bad weather and being alone in a shoebox and not working. I think London is overrated and due tot he constant influx of emigrants at least in law nobody bothers to employ anyone permanently. I could not live with the uncertainty and the cold city life did nothing for me. Now that I'm back in a sunny clime I get grumpy if there is so much as a day of bad weather. I agree London is a rat race and it's very highly geared. My quality of life there did not justify me staying. I wonder though about people like my ex who fitted in and would not consider leaving.

I think there is something about London ... You either love it and simply HAVE to be there or hate it and can't wait to get away ... I lived in Kent for many years and I have friends who get withdrawls symptoms if they don't get their "dose" of London regularly ... Me I only like going every now and then for a show or a something similar ...

As for immigration ... my parents emmigrated to France when I was a baby and I lived there for about 19 years ... but I never "felt" French ... After that I went to UK to improve my English and stayed for 27 years but never "felt" British ... I have finally now returned to my country of birth and culture (southern Spain) and it feels just like home!!! Just as well I never changed my passport all these years!!!

I need it fast. I love to be doing stuff, i still have a lot of energy, i need stress to be happy. So, i really would love to stay around center Europe, but first i'll have to live in Portugal for a while.

There are places i wouldn't want to live in, not even with a great job offer...and i do refer developed countries. So, to me, there is really a lot more than having a nice job. I'm happy because this is not just a theory, i FEEL this way...glad i've evolved to this direction.

Sorry, I've never heard of anything like that here. dunno

I have a few friends in Vancouver that don't own a car. They walk, take public transit or ride their bikes everywhere. It rarely snows there and everything they need is close by.

Regarding the underground city in Canada...
Montreal...

With over 32 km of tunnels spread over an area of twelve square kilometres, the 60 residential and commercial complexes comprise 3.6 square kilometres of floor space, including 80% of all office space and 35% of all commercial space in downtown Montreal. Services include shopping malls, hotels, banks, offices, museums, universities, seven metro stations, two commuter train stations, a bus terminal and the Bell Centre. There are more than 120 exterior access points to the underground city. Some 500,000 people use the underground city every day, especially to escape the traffic and/or Montreal's harsh winters and hot summers.
