After a total hysterectomy we are told to take estrogen replacements. Do you believe that is really important, do we really need to have replacements and if we do not what problems will there be?

I have heard the reasons from doctors but wanted to know from women who are doing it.

I had a total hysterectomy 5 years ago and have not been taking any replacements but have noticed sometimes I feel really cold, was wondering if this is from not taking estrogen?

Kitty, go to women to women .com website. There is some interesting information there that may help you.

My mother had a hysterectomy due to cancer at the age of 28. She took HRT only when she needed to for most of the rest of her life.

My mum had a hysterectomy over 20 years ago, they gave her the HRT patches but they just made her knee's swell so she stopped using them. She sometimes St John's Wort or herbal remedies if she is feeling down, hope that help's kittyteddy bear

I've experienced this Kitty - I took the HRT for about 3 yrs then decided I could do without it - that was about 10 yrs ago and I have been absolutely fine - but we are all different.

There are other things you can use such as Di said above if you start feeling down but to be honest - after a while I was pretty down having to take the HRT and really, have never looked back. No more periods, no more monthly blues, its the best of both worlds.

I took it on the doctors advice at first which I think saw me over the transition period. I think you are doing the right thing by getting as much info as possible before making up your mind and......... good luck thumbs up wave

I don't know the answer to the question being asked but will ask a question to answer it.....have you had your thyroid checked? I have hypothyroid disease and get that way when my level is too low. Also, have you lost a lot of weight? That cold feeling, a bone chilling feeling happens when I lose weight. I once took the replacement therapy when going through menopause and that stuff is dangerous. I weaned myself off it...felt good after but everyones body is different.
Good luck....hang in there.........hug Mary

Right after I had the surgery I was also shivering but it did go away. Just recently I am getting cold again or too hot also, but I had started the replacements right after the surgery and my kids said I changed into a person they though they would have to put away. My moods were just awful so I stopped and have not taken any since, but as I am aging now I was wondering if it was why I am either cold or hot.

I had my thyroid checked and said it was alright.wave
