There are diferent forms of meditation gilly.
I use TM, which with a little training can be
used by anyone.

As for what goes through your mind, the
answer is nothing.
Thats the whole point.
To be able to shut down the constant
chatter and reach a state of stillness,
rejuvenates the mind, body and soul to
bring about a calm and heightened sense
of awareness.
Just try to relax, close your eyes and think
of absolutely nothing.
Your mind will not let you, it never stops.
If you can achieve this state of 'stillness'
for say about twenty minutes twice a day,
you have found you nirvana.grin

I can do that..

I used to suffer with insomnia years ago.. until someone taught me how to find that 'stillness'.. until my head is absolutely empty.

It took me AGES to master it.. (really it did).. and I found it reeeeally frustrating at first. Now it's sooooooo easy for me.. almost like flipping the off switch.

I used to learn how get to sleep. I've done it for donkeys years now tho.. I don't even know how long. 15yrs ish? ...

I think I could go into the Guinness book of records for the fastest person to fall asleep.. If I want too.. I seem to be able to do it in 2mins flat. haha

So........after much practice you learned how to empty your head completely! laugh

Is there a meditation technique for filling one's head? I can think of a few who might need it! laugh

I leant mine initially by laying there.. and instead of letting thoughts float about scrambling about in my head.. I would imagine them being more organised.

So that instead.. all I could see with my eyes in my head.. was BLACK..

I wouldn't allow my eyes (inside my head) to look left or right...up or down.. just straight ahead.

Then I would imagine that any thoughts .. (like shopping.. worries.. music.. whatever).. would slide in from the left or right.. almost like a Pc desktop.. with a black background.. and white words.. sliding in from one side (or the other) towards the middle of the screen.

Each time those thoughts tried to sliiiiiiide in from the side.. I'd put an invisible hand/block in front of them.. and push them back the way they came. So that it went back to only blackness.. and absolutely still.

If my mind was particularly 'busy'.. the thoughts would slide in fast.. one after the other.. but them more I pushed them back the slower they got. Until none came forwards.

Thats how I learnt.. and that's how I still do it.. but I can do it like breathing now.. it's almost 'natural' for me to do it now.

As soon as I think .. 'Claire.. sleep now'....

BOOM.. gone. laugh

I think there are many forms of meditation. From a relaxed state to a state of delirium.

I was just thinking.. the hardest part for me.. the part that took the longest.. was learning how to not move my eyes.. to only see the 'black' ... and to organise that the thoughts slide in from the sides... and don't just scramble about in there.

THAT took time.
