I think we women are fortunate to live in Western cultures. I lived in Turkey for a while. At my age in Turkey, being over 30 now, a women who is not yet married has little chance of ever doing so. I knew women in their 40's and 50's who were basically 'on the shelf' and would most likely stay there--women who were still living at home with their mother/parents because generally single people stay with the family instead of getting their own apartment--Turkish people are very family oriented. These women were always slim and trim because of their cultural attitudes to food and diet and fitness, they were working and had good jobs and incomes, they were from middle or upper class families, and were attractive and smart women. One of them was divorced, one in her mid-50's; her husband hand married a much younger women. She told me men in Turkey, older men, are only interested in younger women; she seemed resigned to being alone the rest of her life, unless she met a man from another culture.

There are a lot of older women in Western culture who are single because of divorce, and they have a much better chance of finding a mate within their age range. I don't feel past it yet, at 31, but if I lived in another culture, was a member of that culture, I might.
