I was reading the thread about the judge in Alabama who got fired and I noticed how any disagreement with any opinion was interpreted as "bashing" or "putting down". Is this some kind of cultural gap?

Reading the stuff on here the "putting down" seems to be only about a few quite narrow topics and really only where it affects others. Bush, Iraq and a couple of other things is about the sum of it.

I read a lot about what a great country America is....yet the people saying that seem to be VERY sensitive to any implied criticism. Where is the self-confidence that goes with the knowledge that your country is great?

About the tax dollars that have helped rebuild other countries......is there an implied price? We give you money and you shut up about what we do in the world forever more? I don't believe you really feel that way.

It's just my opinion but one I would welcome your response to.

Sometimes the criticism is offensive because it is ill informed. Hollywoods success has given many a distorted view of the facts of American history etc, which they then use as a bassis of thier opinion.

Most Americans believe that the money spent on foriegn aid is an act of charity, and would like to believe that our involvement in foregn affairs is altrusic or for self preservation. When the recipient of our humanitarian efforts turns around and is critical of our efforts it is like biting the hand that feeds you.

A good healthy tax increase of 40 or 50% would solve that.

Your taxes or ours? My point was that, within our means, we do our bit as much as the US does. There seems to be a feeling in these forums sometimes that the US props up the rest of the world financially - it just isn't true.

I don't follow this. A lot of the American economy is funded by borrowing abroad....those lenders have a big stake in a prosperous America. Yet all I read here is blaming foreigners for taking jobs and doing America down. They have been funding you....they are not disinterested parties. The global economy is all tied together and that available market has made America rich.

Yes we allow foriegn investments. But if I own a resturaunt, and you invest in it, I'd be a liitle concerned if you took out a full page ad claiming that this resturaunt was serving poison.

Even taking your argument at face value why would it be good for Danes to spend more on military and less on third world aid?

I think a better analogy might be if I owned the restaurant in your country and you ran it for me and I employed some of your fellow citizens in my enterprise I might be concerned if you were borrowing too much against the business, running it into the ground and blaming foreigners for your problems! laugh

By the way what do you mean you ALLOW foreign investment. You, like most other countries are heavily dependent on foreign investment.

Much is made of the failure of the administration's policies. Let us remember that CONGRESS (democratic majority) has written the budget.

I really get tired of that "feel the effects" crap....why not just build up your military to take care of your problems and boot us out of Germany.

wow!

I think the German Military 'booting' the US out of Germany would get a LOT of attention!
It would raise a lot of spectres of the beginning of WW II.

Technically, yes, we 'allow' it. Of course it makes good sense, but ultimately we do ALLOW it.wave

Good Idea, unless there is an Irish equivalent of Pizza, or Chinese. I just don't see corned beef and cabbage going over big as a drive thru eatery

No, Irish food is good thanks but it sounds like your recession will be bad for the restaurant business.

Excuse me? Republicans have had control of both the senate and house of representatives for 6 years (til Nov 06) The Democratic majority in the Senate is by only 1 vote, not enough to over-ride a Bush veto. So blaming the Democrats for the failure of our economic policy is stretching the facts to the beaking point.

Hey, we still gotta eat! And we Americans are notorious for eating comfort food when we are stressed. You could get in on the ground floor here, my friend.

C'mon, the Democrats have made no significant accomplishments, and the veto has not been resorted too very often. The fact is they don't have any ideas that resonate with the American people.

Now THAT is really funny!
Allow it? We encourage it! My dear are you aware that we would not be worrying about the "R" word (Recession) we would be worrying about the "D" word (I'll let you figure out what D stands for) if China ever decided to cash in all their Dollars and investments in American corporate and municipal bonds and treasury bills. Why this country would be in serious trouble to the point of being virtually wiped out financially.
It's admirable to have pride in our country, we have a lot to be proud of, but this isn't the late 40's anymore. Pride can sometimes be interpreted as arrogance by other cultures.
