Not a very good place in an Emergency.

In an emergency, No. In SA I kept the magazine seperate - just in case some twit got hold of gun. In fact, on the advice of an ex-Recce friend, I kept few magazines scattered around the house in "hiding" places .....just in case I needed to do a Dirty Harry type shoot-out..... Fully loaded was only when I had it on me..... like when doing gardening outdoors, or travelling.

Hi Darl - Yup, is/was very bad! Once, I didn`t have my gun on me, sitting outside in the evening, was attacked by a half-naked intruder (usual modus operandi for rapists/attackers - leave their clothing off property, afterwards wash and dress - no evidence) - Knocked him out flat with a spade - he died next morning in hospital.

The bad guys will always have guns......somebody will always sell them to them.......and you can always make a zip gun....then will have to control radio ant., little pipe and tubing. In prison they make killing tools from toothbrushes and hair brushes.

D'oh! maybe its the damn people?

I posted this on a similar thread somewhere in the forums but didnt get much attention and i would really like to get some oppinions on this, especially from Americans:

I used to live in a country (not importand which one) that everyone had a right to OWN guns but it was very strictly prohibited to BEAR arms (as in carrying them around with you, in your car etc).

Trust me, i felt perfectly safe in my house with a shotgun locked in the high cupboard of my bedroom and a G3A3 7.62mm automatic army assault riffle oiled and waiting in the other shelf. So did everybody else there.

But if i even tried to carry any of them anywhere, it was immediate jail time.

Footnote: Both of the guns mentioned are more than 2 feet long (ok, they can be dissmantled but it's not the point). Ownership of small handguns, that could be easily be carried around unnoticed, was also strictly prohibited.

Just a thought for all my american friends.

What kind of gun related crime was there?
The American right to bear arms is the right to carry the weapon, if you so desire or feel the need. It is expected that you will do so responsibly. The controversy comes from the mind set of certain liberals who seem to think "I wouldn't have shot that person if you hadn't allowed me to carry a gun!"

My Father maintains that the right to bear arms should not be limited to guns, but should include Abrams tanks if one can afford them.

Manolito,

I understand what you're saying, I really do but what you may be missing is that those people you refer to as shooting other people are criminals.

I honestly can't remember the last time I heard about an average guy or gal pulling out a hand gun in anger and killing someone with the exception of the ocassional murder-suicide scenario. I'm sure it happens but not often.

What does happen very often is an armed criminal accidently or on purpose kills someone during a robbery, home intrusion, etc... Then there's gang bangers and drug dealers shooting each other which we always hear about.

You acknowledge that all criminals will all have guns. Does it make sense to take away the rights of law abiding citizens to maintain an equal footing? To me it doesn't and I don't believe the size or length of the gun would matter a whole lot.

(Isn't that just like a man to say size doesn't matter)

Seriously, banning handguns for those who already obey the law will result in only criminals having them. There's also the issue of the right to bear arms which has been discussed here several times.

What about school shootings and the crimes commited hot-blooded ? Would they still happen (and with that intensity) if it was very difficult for non-crimanals to own specific types of guns?

Do you feel the need to carry a handgun with you for your safety? Or you just want the right to own guns so you can defend your family / home / property if you need to?

I have never lived in the US, so i do not know how life is there. All i know is what i can occasionally see on the news channel, papers or the net. So i am just feeling out for an oppinion on this, trying to understand.

The last school shooting i remember of, was done with semiautomatic handguns. I suppose that they are legal there (i am not sure which kind of guns are legal there).
So, one of the arguments here is that "guns" is a very broad term and maybe the kind/type of what you are allowed to own could be regulated...

No, I did not kill him. I just bashed him over the head with a very heavy old fashioned spade I used for the compost. I had to keep hitting him cause he kept trying to get at me, till I knocked him out. The police took him away, took him to hospital because he was dazed. He died from a brain haemorage.

I guess it wouldn`t have happened if the authorities had banned a lethal weapon like a spade? ..... Then I would have just been a victim of an unsolved crime - a survivor, if I was not dead.

My farmhouse was surrounded by 2m high wire fence - he climbed inside looking for trouble and found it.

What else can one do when someone attacks?dunno

That's just it.
Guns are prohibited in School-Zones and Schools.
Perfect Setup for a Stinking Nut-Case.

Samething, someone walks into a place and starts shooting.
He'd probably think twice if there was a good chance that someone were Packing a Gun in there.

And what is the difference between a Revolver and a Semi-Automatic Hand Gun?
Both of them are basically "Selfloading".
Generally,Crime with Firearms has increased in practically every Country that has outlawed Firearms.conversing wave

my shotgun is in an easily accesible high cupboard in my bedroom. It would take me about 30 seconds to go in the house, take it and put both rounds in anyone attempting to harm me or my family.

I totally agree with the concept of being able to defend yourself and your property/family.

I am however, trying to make a few other points and at the same time understand how the americans view the regulation of allowed weapons.
