Because you showed such compassion and sadness over the fires in Greece last August, I went back through my Olympia pictures and found this one that I wanted you to see. The hillside just behind the spectators was once covered with trees. Life has begun again (you see evidence of grass growing), but this picture demonstrates how close the fires came to the ancient site. For perspective, the ceremony was held in the original stadium. I was seated in the area that was once a track on which the athletes once ran. The crowd of onlookers was just next to us, and the fires came up to the area that you can see in the background.
