In my America, we believe in the Ten Commandments, the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

We believe that all are created equal under the law.

We believe in freedom of speech and religion for all, not just those who think like we do.

We believe in the right to defend ourselves and our nation.

We believe that the power of the government should never extend beyond the rights of its citizens to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I would like to add my opinion here if thats ok uh oh!

I think people spend way too much energy looking at the world as divided by borders and countries...
the world is one place... not different places...one earth....
the only one we have. D'oh!
we are all here together and we should respect each other in the sense that we are only visitors here to a degree.. handshake
your country, my country...what a bunch of bs....confused

this divided thinking is the reason why there is so much hate and ugliness in the world..
we are one family...one planet..when are we going to act like it?

If that was to happen ...what a wonderful world this would be....... heart beating heart beating

jmho... sad flower

What was ethnocentric about that? I'm speaking for the rights of everyone in America to believe what they want. I can't speak for the right of people in other countries, cause I don't live there. I think all people should have these basic freedoms, but unfortunately not all do.

Jodi, I agree with you to an extent, we should respect the rights of everyone the world over. There's not a whole lot the US govt can or should do about that in other countries. Trying to protect the human rights of people in other countries is what has gotten us into so much trouble in the past and currently. We've got no business trying to make other countries do what we feel is right.

Makes sense to me, but what happened? Liberties and freedoms are a dieing thing, it gets worse every year with each stupid new law.

well last time a similar thread was started i was of course blasted
and accused of many rude things-
i had simply said that i dont get the country of origin pride thing

i was accused of being full of crap
pretending im spiritual
etc
ad nauseum

but i still have the same feeling *shrug*

i have never really felt the 'we' thing
except in one fraternal group ive joined
and even that is only coincidental and
i now realize as time goes on-its largely superficial.

we we we all the way home.
im american
born in NYC lived there a long time
among so many cultures.
each place has an interesting history
and as people have multiplied
and all that means...ideals are 'adjusted'
and 'groups' form and make decisions-
people screw things up-its what we do.
we look at differences rather than similarities
but america was begun to be based on the opposite of that.

'pride' leads to seperation leads to so many pitfalls.
people are distracted today, post rather than vote,
sit rather than march-lots of talk-its a heartbreak im sure
to 'founding fathers' and patriots.

i mean it makes me sad, but all i can do is me.
i just dont ever uerstand why such conversations are ever seen as constructive-but rather create more of whats constrictive.
there was a time when people said-the time for talk is done-
they were patriots.

I don't think it's an argument.

The OP stated her opinion.

I don't like the "WE" part of it either.

It would have made me more comfortable if the sentences began with "I"

dunno

Want an argument?
Here's a little one...

Jodi, I agree with you to an extent, we should respect the rights of everyone the world over. There's not a whole lot the US govt can or should do about that in other countries. Trying to protect the human rights of people in other countries is what has gotten us into so much trouble in the past and currently. Bebe said this and perpetutates the myth that most of what the US does overseas is to protect the rights of others....some is but most is to protect the dollar or the interests of US companies. What has got you into trouble (if that is the right word) is interfering against the rights of people in other countries. Where the intervention has been humanitarian it has mostly gone ok.

PS I'm glad Magna Carta still features on a list of fundamental documents.....pity that Guantanamo Bay is the exact negation of the right to Habeas Corpus estabished by Magna Carta.
dunno
