This close.....

Tell us your close call. Doesn't have to be a brush with death or anything.......could be a date you didn't go on and sighed relief afterward....

I've had quite a few of those "brushes"........many that I've been very aware of and some others, probably loads of them, that I don't know about!

was riding with my ex fiance in his tractor trailer going thru St. louis, durring rush hour and road construction when I heard him say oh sh**
turned and saw he was holding the lense of his glasses in one hand, one eye closed and trying to steer the 18 wheeler with his one free hand. mind you 6 lanes of rush hour traffic! That was a pretty close one for me!

I was at one my first races and needed all the practice I could get so I signed up for a 5 lap early morning "hardship" practice session. The track temp was pretty cold. There's a "groove" around a race track that is very clean of debris but if you get off that groove you get into what they call the "marbles" little bits of rubber that coats the surface which act like ball bearings. I was vaguely aware of this at the time. Well I found myself behind a corvette which was too fast on the straitaways and too wide in the corners to pass. He was smoking pretty bad so I really wanted to get around him. There is a section of this track that incorporates half of an oval and it's fairly wide and long so I decided to take a high line around and pass him on the outside.

Well, when I went high I got right into the marbles and next thing I know I'm going sideways at about 90 mph with a full left lock on the wheel and brakes locked up. I was heading straight for the buttress end of a guard rail which was going to hit me right in the drivers door probably killing me or making me a paraplegic for life at least. I let the brakes go and in an instant the front wheel bit into the pavement and the car rotated 90 degrees and I went straight up and over the top of a sand bank and completely out of the track. I found myself flying through the treetops with branches smacking me in the face. I couldn't dive behind the dash cause the shoulder harness was keeping me bolt upright. All I could do was wait for the inevitable limb to lop my head clean off.

I landed in the woods on my wheels but there was no way to get the car out before the days races started. In the evening, I rounded up about 20 guys and we picked the car up and carried it out of the woods between the trees.

Epilogue: While the car was sitting helpless in the woods, spectators stole my fire extingisher, my shift knob and broke the directional lever off.

Dear Ooby Dooby,

You must count yourself lucky in two senses. Firstly, you are still alive. Secondly, those were no longer spectators, but fans.
