So, polygamy...

Polygamy exists in three specific forms, including polygyny (one man having multiple wives), polyandry (one woman having multiple husbands), or group marriage (some combination of polygyny and polyandry). Historically, all three practices have been found, but polygyny is by far the most common.

In most countries, bigamy is illegal. However, in some countries - including America and Canada - the practice of polygamy is tolerated largely because

it is done as a religious practice (and thus involves issues of religious freedom), and
the people involved do not actually marry before the law. Rather, a man will legally marry one woman, and ‘marry’ additional wives in what they consider to be a ’spiritual’ sense.

The American taxpayer pays for much of this lifestyle. Recent records show in one year residents here collected more than $8-million from social services — including food stamps, welfare, health care — but the entire town paid less than $100,000 in income taxes.

“They are told to go on welfare,” Jessop said. “It’s called, “bleeding the beast.” They find it amusing that Satan is supporting God’s work.”

This is one reason the practice is now under scrutiny in America - particularly in Colorado and Utah, states with significant polygamist communities.

Other reasons why polygamy has come under fire:

Some polygamists ‘marry’ underage girls, often (though not always) against their will
In some religious polygamist sects, women are treated as property, and are subject to arranged marriages...

Just wondering what you guys think about this?

Not to take away anything from your thread, but.....

Things are tolerated in Canada because;

1) We are young and still growing

2) Have a tendency to be passive

I agree...I read about stuff like this when i was younger and in church....but i didnt think this was happening now... Where wives are all living in the same house with one husband and a village of children... And, we help support this.

Any right minded thinking man, who is free of mental illness and has witnessed either the behaviour of a sister or any female you would have thought to stick to one unless they want to be nagged to death.

If i were in a culture somewhere else where it was compulsary i think i would have a permenant headache and they could entertain themselves buy ganging up to nag melaugh

looks like its not just a muslim thing, and is becoming more prominant in America. Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate's great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12.

Interesting article on this guy from Utah, his 5 wives and over 25 children

Its true though isn't it!! All the business about a harrum is a load of all toffee.Sultans couldn't work their way through all those women....and what will they do in their spare time.....plot, gossip, and practice nagging.

The sultans had to have somewhere quiet, or keep a cultural climate where they weren't nagged to death.I wonder how many sultans wished they had a small shed to hide in when its was time to sleep with number #37 and shes looking at a sears catalogue at feminism books.

Simple equation, 2 women means trouble....god knows what 40 or 100 were like, i think i would have to be candidate for relocation to the nearest monestary if it were a choice between the two options.grin

laugh

Well I disagree with this Robbie. The only men who kept harems, or men by virtue of their religion are allowed more than one wife, were and are only able or permitted to do so if they can maintain them financially and ensure they have equal status. These women often become intimate friends and experience no jealousy or possessiveness as is toften he case with traditional relationships.

Perhaps it would work equally well vice versa? A man for every day of the week? laugh
