Narconon is a non-profit drug rehab program dedicated to eliminating drug abuse and drug addiction through drug prevention, education and rehabilitation run through the scientology church....

Just watched a program stating its been called a bogus organisation used solely to prey on and convert members to scientology....
What are your thoughts on this 'religion' that seems to be making its way throughout the world?

While its not new that dodgy religions prey on the vulnerable.. this seems quite surprising.. was the reporter or the producer of this documentary a reliable source?

Yes they have opened a new centre in Melbourne Australia and it was a reputable news reporter that was interviewing both past employees and patients....when the centre was interviewed they refused to comment and choked on their own tongue.

Scientology is becoming a fast movement here but I personally find people are suffering more from social diseases and feelings of isolation so seek comfort through the body of a community...whether it be a cult or religion man-made or not....Perhaps they simply seek solace but don't know where to look..

Yeah I agree with you.. its how alot of the wierder 'religions' work...very sinister isn't it.. I think the incidence of these kind of religions will continue to increase as people feel more and more isolated JMO

The scientology cult is violent to its opponents and lawsuit happy toward its critics. Be very afraid if they ever mention your name and the phrase "fair game" in the same sentence.

Read about "N-grams". It's a phony-baloney pseudo-science "technique" (a combination of a tape recorder and an electric shock device). You're supposed to "rid yourself of negative thoughts", or in reality, bare your dirtiest and darkest secrets to them. Many who go through this and later try to leave find themselves blackmailed into staying, e.g. actors who are closeted homosexuals.

Ask yourself this: If you knew the owner of a business was part of or giving money to, say, the Ku Klux Klan, would you give him your business or try to avoid him? If you would avoid him, then think carefully before you watch movies and TV shows with actors who are members of the scientology cult. The cult demands celebrities donate large sums of money (i.e. box office sales), or in the case of "Battlefield Earth", getting such celebrities to star in junk movies to add name value to crap. (The paperback for L. Ron Hubbard's "Battlefield Earth" only became a best-seller because cult members were told to buy the books in quantity. It didn't sell on merit and was laughed at in the sci-fi community.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Scientologists

Cut and paste these search phrases in google to read more:

+"Lisa McPherson" +murder +scientology

+"n-grams" +scientology

+"fair game" +scientology

+clearwater +scientology

+"operation clambake" +scientology

These sites make for very informative reading, too:

Finally, if you're looking for a drug recovery program without a religious indoctrination behind it (nor will they attack yours) look up "Rational Recovery".

a comment to the secondary part of this thred.....

it doesnt need to be one of these new religons to be a "cult"

in my younger years my parents went to a "regular" church was an offshoot of baptist. the church ran every aspect of our lifes to the extent that they decided that public school was evil and that we all should be home schooled. if you didnt attend sunday school, morning service, and evening service you had to have a good reason and had to listen to the tapes.

readers beware of any religen that you must give up your rights and opinions for.

hahahahaha

okeydoke

cert drug counselors know everything
kinda like addicts
clean or not

youre nice and all
but google and wikipedia arent always accurate
but if considered research, an accurate sign of todays society

narconon may have been adopted by scientology but certainly not initiated by it

and that by no measure nullifies my concern of such a post...

youd be surprised some of the orgs that fund beneficial efforts in the world
it doesnt always mean indoctrination or that it doesnt benefit.

ps these things also make wonderful tax write offs

der

Well you are bored enough to return...go to bed then...
The centre in Melbourne is run solely by the Scientology church and spends more time trying to convert people than it does concentrating on its patients...the topic was thoughts not personal attacks

sweetie it was not a personal attack
in fact i was lamenting the fact that you werent willing to discuss it

one center
one program on telly
wikipedia?? any person can edit wikipedia

its just that one administrator in one centre of any outreach effort
can ruin any good deed

i never heard you mention the unfortunate situation of one centre-

blanket statements repeated from programs?
thats been the basis of so many sad outcomes

i think i addressed some offerings of conversation
seems as tho you still have no interest in discussing anything
thats ok
doesnt mean i didnt have any decent input

dunno

Last I heard NarcAnon was an offshoot of Alanon and or AA. They swiped the name, bastardiezed some of the philosphies, steps, ideas and reading from Alcholics Anonmous and made it a workable non profite association.
Thier goals were to aide narcotic addicts aka all kinds of drug addicts with the similar program of Alcholics Anonmous.
I have known several people who went and recieved help from NA. I was not aware any guorp or organization had "taken control" of it. It is possible a scientoligy organization has adopted some NA ideas just as many hospitals and treatment centers world wide have adopted and use AA ideas and practices....teddy bear

ppl would be surprised at some of the donors to that program

blues

and im glad to know health professionals are relying on it and
casual internet sources as information

that is so scary...
