I've had a few bear encounters but usually with black or brown bears, only once with a grizzly. Been chased once and charged once as well as stalked by a grizzly that left giant paw prints while elk hunting in the rockies. Not anywhere near the size of the one in your photo though.
The one close encounter with a grizzly was on the edge of a lease while working on a drilling rig in the foothills of the Rockies. Just wandered up and sniffed me from about 20 feet away. Rather an uncomfortable feeling, knowing full well there's no way to outrun it, but he left me alone.

Now that I'm moving to southern BC, I'm sure I'll have even more encounters. I have a creek behind me there and I've been told there are bears in it on regular basis and my cousin has them at his place almost daily. One woman across the street had one inside her house last year, looking through her fridge. Kind of scary.

They aren't fluffy teddy bears.

laugh go like this if one comes up to you I am toldapplause laugh

you are welcome as always joel, you know that ranger told us it was a black bear that was agressive enough to lick a childs foot and drag her out of her tent and away where he ate her, although I don't know if he was just getting his jollies off from scaring me but the fact is is this, black bears are growing more and more aggressive because not only do people feed them but their invironment is becomming smaller, a human acts rabid and wild when backed in a corner, lord knows I see enough of them
15,20 years ago, this was their home. After draining and burning so many swamp areas, building thousands of houses, the bears are still here. Most people around these parts think they all need to be relocated.I think they should be left alone for the most part.

<Pictures of the bear are in my profile>

A man was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head.

The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6' high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world.

Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the risks involved when in the wild.

Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours including a missing hiker

The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol were the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found.

Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (the Service ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it immensely.

The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.

Think about this:
If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's navel when he stood upright. The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.

At first, when I first looked at your post I thought that it would be nice to see a real life teddy, then I realaised he was shot at and thought that that the guy had said he was attacked by the bear a an excuse and just wanted to hunt that bear.

But I carried on reading and I found that the bear had actually killed people. I was amazed to read he was to be stuffed and displayed at the airport as a warning to tourists.

When I think of bears, I think of nice cuddly bears, not cold blooded killers (hungry bears), and since I’ve always been fed a nice portrait of bears, it is hard to think of them that way although I know it’s true, they are dangerous.

We don’t have bears in Valencia except at the zoo (I think) so I guess we’re safe here. But if I ever go up there where you are, I’ll make sure I don’t go anywhere near bears are just in case.

Egads! That's the biggest bear that I've ever seen! dropping jaw

My uncle was a Baptist missionary to the native people in Alaska ( at a small fishing village- sadly, the name of it escapes me at the moment) and he would tell us tales about the bears and while they look cuddly, they are not to be trifled with. I always took those words of his to heart. Whenever I happen to be out in the wilderness, I would wear bells to help warn the bears of my approach and I learned to camp safely.

While it is troubling to learn that this magnificent creature was shot, I understand all too well the necessity of it having been done. I think the Anchorage Airport is correct in having the bear stand post to warn the tourists of the dangers of the wild. My wonder is if it will possibly encourage big game hunters too.

How about Barrow, Alaska? You think this is a big bear, come see the Polar Bear! That grizzly would be a snack, yes, a snack...
