Are age and wisdom synonymous?

Posted: Apr 9, 2008, 4:03 PM CST
you are soo ... rolling eyes

Staying on topic ... giggle

Wisdom encompasses a pool of knowledge not fathomable by age , intellect or efforts of any sort. There is a lot of patience and painful perseverance and understanding of the nuances of human life that goes in to being enlightened or in simple words gaining absolute wisdom and knowledge.

Over the ages, there have been brilliant scholars , philosophers and sages who had much wisdom surpassing their age. While a whole bandwagon of common people young and old couldnt imagine reaching those depths.

I do think though a lot of Intellectual capability and capacity to think is inherited which gets conditioned and moulded by external influences.
But this is just another factor.

So I think age has no bearing on any of the issues you mention .
We live and learn .. ( if we want to ).

Yes and no....of course knowledge and understanding, and the spectrum of experience on many profound levels would elevate wisdom. However, that does not mean a 35 year old man is less wise than a 65 year old man. It depends on the application of knowledge and exercising some curiosities along the way. But we cannot sit here and suggest that a 45 year old narrow minded couch potato who just works, drinks on the weekends, and watches porn all the time is more wise than a 25 year old man who is a knowledge seeker with an open mind.

Then again, one would have to consider the age of the soul and the spefick journey it has traveled and is currently in. Old souls that keep coming back to this astral plane (our world) are truly wiser than the young sould who are new to the earthly ways.

Wisdom comes, generally, in the area of an individual's passion. It requires persistance and an open mind.

Wisdom is not a state that encompasses all things. A man may be wise in respect to one thing and a fool in respect to another. It may help you handle unknown instances if it becomes a mental process that is generally discovered through trial and error experienced by oneself or observed in others.

Wisdom is a matter of personal interpretation. It may even be defined by the era in which you exist.

Most of all, wisdom is a perception of an individual as they exist in the minds of others. A wise man does not consider himself so, for with wisdom comes his humility and an understanding of how little he actually knows.

Age is a factor only in that the older one becomes, the greater are the quantities of experiences from which to draw conclusions and derive data.

I believe it is a variety like instead of a vase of flowers a vase of people with different colors and dimensions and depths from new cuts to old cuts still hanging on.Wisdom is something that only gets better with age but you must be able to retain it lips

Is it as simple as that? Do we naturally accumulate wisdom as the years pass us by, or are some amongst us, regardless of age, just a little more switched on?

And by wisdom, I'm thinking the ability to apply knowledge gained to better ourselves and others. I believe wisdom isn't just knowledge in itself.

Are all young people naive, and older folk wise by definition as some seem to suggest?
Oh, and you're all responsible for your own conduct on this here thread. I take no responsibility for any ensuing battles.

Fire away folks!

I think we do to an extent, yes... but not necessarily, no!! Sounds a bit airy-fairy I know but I, for one, probably do not possess the "savvy" one would expect from a 46 year old. I have somehow held onto this "child-like" innocence/naivety for longer than I perhaps should have. I have become better in recent years and, yes, that is due to experiences I have had, and exposure to certain people/situations. There are many people out there young and pretty "switched on" for their age and yet there are older ones less so.

I think that is the key.... experiences and exposure, one's environment, social/peer group, diversity of inter-action... I think it all plays a part??

Just look around... in RL and otherwise. There are those of my age and older that often project less mental agility than a soup spoon, yet there are some much younger people where I think.... whoooaaa, pretty smart cookie!!

There are those here (for example), and I'm sure they know who they are, who's sagacity and erudition I can only aspire to!!

Good thread BTW...!! thumbs up

To me it is the serenity prayer that applies to this question..

acceptance of the things we cannot change

the courage to change the things we can

wisdom comes in knowing the difference between what we can change and what we cannot....

this knowledge I dont believe comes with age but through the experiences we have nmet along the way..
and our interpretations of those experiences and the application of them to out daily lives...jmho....jodiwave teddy bear
